B2B4I contributed to revealing the role hospitals play in the health innovation ecosystem and their capacity to embed innovation networks in the territory. Frequently regarded as passive actors, translational research has repositioned them at the core of the cycle of discovery. They are the main locus in the production of examination knowledge, a stage in the shift from exploration to exploitation knowledge. However, the literature identifies three main gaps: i) hospitals are still hidden actors in the innovation ecosystem; ii) the process of production of examination knowledge in the cycle of discovery has yet to be sufficiently clarified; and iii) multidimensional networks of proximity (cognitive, organizational, institutional, social and geographic) in the production of this knowledge have not been sufficiently explored.
