Summary: |
This project is targeted at the Promotion of Books and Reading for Underprivileged Populations in Northern Portugal under the Operation North - Regional Enhancement measure (Medida 1.4 - Operação Norte). The measure is aimed at the socioeconomic development of northern Portugal, keenly aware of the importance of reading as the basis of qualification, as "a decisive factor in the competitiveness of an open economy". Thus, it can be stated "that increasing the average level of qualification necessarily implies increasing the average level of our reading skills", the basis of other forms of knowledge, which find in books their main sustenance. Hence, support for integrated projects to boost reading and books, in a sustained and effective approach.
This project has two main goals: on the one hand, the creation of a Network of Libraries, specialised staff and heads from reading services, capable of strengthening this cultural domain in the Metropolitan Area of Porto, maintaining constant attention on a joint project, and, on the other, to hold Reading Workshops targeted at immigrant communities from Eastern Europe and children and teenagers from social neighbourhoods and institutions. |
