Objectives

This curricular unit aims to carry out a practical internship in laboratory or clinical context.


OBJECTIVES

1-Contact laboratory / clinical environment in the cancer patient approach;

2-Learning and understanding of the technical laboratorial / clinical management methods of the main types of cancer;

3-Recognize the crucial role of the multidisciplinary diagnostic and clinical approach of cancer patients;

4-Practice Laboratory / clinical observership

Learning outcomes and competences

1-To acquire concepts on laboratory methods used in the diagnosis / or research on the clinical management methods of the main types of cancer;

2-Recognize the main fields and translational research lines and clinical Oncology

3-Realize that the diagnosis of cancer diseases requires constant updating of analytical methods and clinical approach because of the growing knowledge of the biology of the tumors;

4-Contextualize the knowledge acquired in the evolution of medical practice and new therapeutic approaches.

1. Implementation and execution of experimental / laboratory protocols used in the areas of oncobiology, clinical pathology, anatomic pathology, molecular pathology and oncogenetics;

2. Observation of clinical cases, preparation and interpretation of clinical histories consultations of the most frequent pathologies (1. Breast Cancer, Cancer of the digestive system 2, 3. Cancer of the urinary system and male genital, 4. Cancer gynecological, 6. Teaching methods and learning activities

Individual work (self-learning) is carried out under the supervision and scrutiny of a tutor.

The rules on the preparation and delivery of the work willbe available on Moodle.

The evaluation of this CU is final. Students will be assessed by submitting an internship report.

The evaluation criteria are based on the quality of the written work developed and on active participation during the internship.

The result is expressed in numerical scale of 20 values. Approved students with a rating of 10 or higher.

Students will have to choose one of the following trainings: laboratory internship (in a laboratory or research group of IPO Porto / I3S or other Research Institute to be designated) or clinical internship (in a clinic of the IPO Porto to designate).
