Objectives

1- Develop knowledge on infectious diseases in swine, poultry and companion animals (dog, cat)

2- Explore the paradigm shift in the prophylaxis and therapy of infectious diseases, with special emphasis on Animal Welfare (AW), the use of clinical guidelines and antimicrobial stewardship programs.

3- Explain the legal framework of specific infectious diseases

4- Contribute to the development of clinical decision-making

5- Develop transversal skills: analysis of scientific articles, scientific writing and communication at different levels (scientific, tutors/producers, general public)

Learning outcomes and competences

Upon successful completion of the UC, the student should be able to:

1- Describe the respective infectious diseases (etiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs…)

2- Select agents/disease for inclusion in differential diagnosis

3- Outline a diagnostic strategy, and know how to correctly interpret laboratory results

4- Design an individual therapeutic/prophylactic protocol

5- Relate the swine welfare framework (DGAV, EU pig law, EURCAW) on the impact on reducing infectious diseases

6- Apply Guidelines for Companion Animals to promote the prudent use of antimicrobials, minimizing the occurrence of resistance

7- Write a small scientific text using a reference manager, using techniques to avoid plagiarism; summarise and present a scientific paper

Comments from the literature

The follwoing are made available on MOODLE: Lecture notes (powerpoints), laboratory protocols of the practicals, selected scientific articles.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures by powerpoint presentations.

Practical classes use active teaching student-centred teaching methods. Activities include the extraction of information from various sources, for example identifying and analysing scientific articles, legislation or websites, analysis and discussion of clinical cases, and a farm visit.

Students are asked to bring tablet/laptop etc.for the practicals.

Eligibility for exams

Attendance is monitored in practical classes using a signature record sheet. This is transposed to “Assiduidade” in Moodle, visible for students. It is the sole responsibility of the student to make sure that their presence has been properly recorded by the teacher.

The frequency of practical classes as defined in the ICBAS "Pedagogical and Student Achievement Assessment Regulations", Art. 19, Point 2 (“do not exceed the limit number of absences corresponding to 25% of the scheduled classes”, i.e., 3 ABSENCES allowed).

The classes begin at the scheduled time. There is a tolerance of 5 minutes. Students arriving after this tolerance shall be marked as "late" in moodle.

Attendance/Frequency of the practical lessons as well as the results of continuing evaluation will be kept during one (1) academic year.

Calculation formula of final grade

A final classification system is proposed, consisting of a distributed Written Test (2 Interim Assessments) complemented by a Continuous Assessment system carried out in practical classes.

GRADING CALCULATION

FINAL GRADE = (mean grade Written Test * 75%) + (mean gradee of 5 items of continuing evaluation * 25%)

To pass this curricular unit, the component of written test is compulsory and requires a value of at least 9.5/20 points in each component.

The WRITTEN TEST (75%) can be carried out:

a) In the NORMAL SEASON: The evaluation of the Normal Season (Época Normal) is distributed, i.e. a total of two evaluations (components), in the interim weeks (semana intercalar). It is mandatory to obtain a score greater than 9.5/20 to approve each component.
b) In the APPEAL SEASON: Students who failed in one or both components in the Normal Season evaluation (Época Normal) or who wish to improve their grades may do so in the Appeal Exam (“Exame de Recurso”). I.e. students can do only the Part (component) they failed in the Normal season.
c)In the Special Season, students will have to take the exam in the entire subject (i.e. both components).

The CONTINUING EVALUATION (25%) consists of 6 items, 5 of which will be used to calculate the final grade.

The Continuous Assessment will be carried out in the practicals, there will be no other oportunities or re-sits. This system will be presented in the 1st theoretical lecture and will only be implemented if all students agree.

Details of the items of the continuing evaluation will be presented during the first lecture.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Classification improvement

As defined in "Regulamento Pedagógico e de Avaliação do Aproveitamento dos Estudantes" do ICBAS (Capítulo IV).

Observations

Attendance to students is throughout the lecture period, preferably by appointment.

Course contents and lecture notes are available on MOODLE.
