Objectives

The Angiology and Vascular Surgery Curricular Unit aims to provide Integrated Masters in Medicine students at the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Porto with an in-depth exposure to knowledge in the area of vascular pathology.

Thus, in addition to deepening knowledge in the areas of peripheral obstructive arterial disease, aneurysmal arterial disease, acute limb ischemia, extra-cranial cerebrovascular disease, venous thromboembolism and chronic venous insufficiency of the lower limbs (varicose veins), the student should have contact with other pathologies, namely with the clinical characteristics and therapeutic needs of diabetic foot, aortic dissection, renovascular hypertension, vascular trauma with a particular emphasis on iatrogenic lesions , hyperhidrosis, vascular malformations, limb lymphedema, diagnostic methods in vascular pathology and therapeutic alternative in  medical as well in  endovascular, conventional and endoscopic surgery.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the learning process, the student should be able to diagnose the different pathologies by preparing a clinical history, requesting the complementary diagnostic tests required to establish the definitive diagnosis, proposing appropriate medical therapy for each clinical situation, knowing the criteria that justify referral of the patient to specialized evaluation by the Angiology Specialist and Vascular Surgery, and to know the methodology of follow-up of patients submitted to different types of surgical treatment.

Working method

Program

The Curricular Unit program is carried out through attendance at the regular activities of the Angiology and Vascular Surgery Service, in its different consultations, in its hospitalization, in its vascular diagnostic laboratories and in its surgical centers, counting on the commitment of all its staff. professionals for its execution.
The pathologies covered will be Aortic Aneurysmal Disease, Chronic Venous Disease, Vascular Anomalies, Acute limb and visceral ischemia, Cerebral Atherosclerotic Disease with Extra-Cranial involvement, Peripheral arterial obstructive disease with a focus on the Diabetic Foot. Conventional and endovascular treatments will be mandatory for the student.
The student's exposure time to activities occurs over a period of two hours per week over a period of thirteen weeks.

Mandatory literature

Bibliografia a consultar; Existente na biblioteca do Serviço de Cirurgia Vascular

Teaching methods and learning activities

The teaching is based on the theoretical training program defined for the Curricular Unit, and as a practical activity that will be carried out with the collaboration of a counselor specifically appointed for each student. All students must contact with patients  in the ward, outpatient clinic, with vascular laboratory and theatre.

A  classification of 9.5 values in a maximum of 20 values. Is requires for aproval.

Calculation formula of final grade

The assessment components must take into account attendance, commitment, demonstrated knowledge and the final work carried out by the student. This classification has a weight of 30% in the continuous assessment and 70% in the final work.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

The evaluation in special time for the students who can benefit from it is obtained through an oral test.
