Objectives
Upon the successful conclusion of the curricular unit, the student must be able to:
- Know the principles of organ donation for transplantation;
- Gain knowledge of different types of organ and tissue transplantation.
- Learning about the indications for transplantation
- Develop skills in patient evaluation, selection, and management for transplantation.
- Learn about immunology and its relevance to transplantation.
- Understand the role and inherent risks of medications and immunosuppression in transplant patients.
- Monitor the patient on the waiting list, in the immediate postoperative period and after post-discharge ;
- Contact with the surgical procedure in its various phases - organ harvesting and transplantation;
- Understand the ethical standard, as well as national policy regarding organ donation and transplantation
Learning outcomes and competences
Considered essential in the learning of Transplantation Medicine is a basic theoretical knowledge of:
- Demonstrate a solid understanding of the ethical considerations surrounding organ transplantation.
- Identify suitable candidates for transplantation through thorough patient assessment (from an organic and psychosocial point of view)
- Understand the immunological concepts that underlie organ rejection and immunosuppression strategies.
- Develop skills in communicating with patients and families about transplantation procedures and expectations.
- Acquire knowledge of post-operative care, monitoring, and management of transplant patients.
- Learn about the potential complications and challenges associated with transplantation, both surgical and medical
The practical learning experience extends through the following stages:
- Act of harvesting
- Transplant - surgical procedure
- Outpatient clinic: pre-transplant and post-transplant
- Managing the transplant waiting list
- Assessment of the acutely ill inpatient
- Monitoring the patient in the immediate post-operative period, while in hospital

- Immunology and transplantation
- The basics of immunology and its relevance to transplantation.
- Immunological assessment of potential recipients and donors.
- Patient assessment and selection
- Natural history of the different diseases for which transplantation may be indicated
- Principles of assessment and selection of patients for transplantation.
- Understanding psychological and social factors in patient assessment.
- Surgical techniques and post-operative care
- Surgical procedures involved in transplantation.
- Post-operative care, monitoring and management of transplant patients.
- Immunosuppression and drugs
- The role of immunosuppression in preventing organ rejection.
- Understanding the different immunosuppressive drugs and their side effects.
- Complications and future trends
- Common complications and challenges in transplant medicine.
- Exploring current research, advances and future trends in the field.
Throughout the program students will participate in lectures, case discussions, outpatient consultations and inpatient observation.
