Upon the successful conclusion of the curricular unit, the student must be able to:
- Understand the pathophysiology, diagnosis and principles of handling common and rare surgical entities, with particular clinical relevance in children and adolescents;
- Promote the improvement of the provision of primary health care and referred to child and adolescent population;
- Know the propaedeutic, pathology and clinical common and relevant situations within the Pediatric Surgery;
- Proceed to the differential diagnosis and begin preoperative handling in emergency situations;
- Seize the moments of surgical treatment and identify when referencing;
- Communicate with the child / adolescent parents and attending assistant, demonstrating a responsible and humanistic attitude.
1 - The student should demonstrate an understanding of the pathology and handling related to the following clinical problems:
- Apparent birth defects
- Intestinal obstruction in the newborn
- Acute respiratory distress
- Urinary tract obstruction (malformation uropathies)
- Abdominal masses
- Frequent and / or urgent surgical pathology

The clinical training is focused on the analysis and resolution of problems through supervised clinical practice and occurs with the integration inpatient.
The theoretical subjects are lectured in 6 workshops based on 6 clinical problems.
In the inpatient the practice sessions focus on clinical history, systematic physical examination, differential diagnosis, pre- and postoperative assessment and communication / relationship with the child and family. In the operating room they contact with aseptic techniques and observation in surgical procedures.
