Objectives

This is the second part of a classical course of human gross anatomy that aims at knowledge of human morphology based on the observation and description of the detailed structure of the human cadaver, giving particular detail to Splanchnology, Angiology, Central Nervous System, Sensory Organs and the Cranial Nerves. Students will have the opportunity to integrate the morphological knowledge with notions of physiology, histology, functional and clinical anatomy.

Learning outcomes and competences

Acquisition of detailed knowledge of Human Angiology, Splanchnology, Estesiology, Central Nervous System and Cranial Nerves and their practical application to anatomical dissections and interpretation of normal imagiologic exams.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Program

The detailed program for Systematic Anatomy 2 can be found in the "Documents" folder. In the first lectures, a general introduction to the anatomy of the following three chapters of human anatomy will be presented: Angiology, Splanchnology, Estesiology. At the end of the semester, knowledge of the Central Nervous System will be added.

Theoretical classes - 2 hours/week. Practical classes - 2 hours/week with specific timetable for each class, taking place in the practical classrooms and at the Nuno Grande Museum of the Department of Anatomy; These classes are essential for learning skills in Human Anatomy and continuous assessment of knowledge will be carried out, so all students attending the course for the first time, including worker students with special statuses, will have to attend at a minimum of 75 % of these classes to obtain frequency in the subject and thus be admitted to the exam. Main Bibliography: Gray's Anatomy, any edition of the classic book of Human Anatomy in English. It should be noted that in Anatomy, the essential reading is that of the corpses and cadaveric specimens carried out in practical classes and during periods of autonomous study. Therefore, anatomical specimens and cadavers that are part of the Department of Anatomy's collection are available to students for study, which will be handled both in the space of practical classes and outside their hours upon request. The Department also has anatomical pieces organized in the form of a Museum that is open to students during the entire opening hours of the Department of Anatomy.

Mandatory literature

Susan Standring; Gray.s anatomy. ISBN: 978-0-443-06684-9

Complementary Bibliography

Henry Gray; Gray's Anatomy
Frank H. Netter; Atlas of human anatomy. ISBN: 0-914168-80-0
Keith L. Moore; Clinically oriented anatomy. ISBN: 0-683-06141-0

Teaching methods and learning activities

Two hours/ week of theoretical classes, and one weekly practical class also of two hours. In laboratory classes, dissected human cadavers and anatomical specimens will be used. Students have access to anatomical specimens in practical classes and outside of practical classes hours, upon request.

Eligibility for exams

Attendance of practical classes is required according to the general rules of the University of Porto (only a quarter of unjustified absences are allowed to obtain attendance). There will be individual assessment of the performance of students in practical classes that will be carried out by the teacher of each practical class. The general rules to be observed in the evaluation of students at UP provides the following: "do not exceed the limit number of absences corresponding to 25% of the foreseen classes". Practical classes - 2 hours/week with specific time for each class (in classrooms practical class and at the Nuno Grande Museum of the Department of Anatomy); these classes are essential for learning skills in Anatomy and there will be continuous assessment of knowledge so that all students who attend the course for the first time (including worker students) will have to attend a minimum of 75% of these classes to obtain frequency in the chair and thus be admitted to the exam.

Calculation formula of final grade

The student will pass Systematic Anatomy 2 if he or she succeeds in one of the following three assessment modes:

EVALUATION DISTRIBUTED THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER. It consists of the following components: (i) two interim tests with two exams, one practical and one theoretical, to be held on the same day in the interim week on dates to be designated by the Pedagogical Council. Both tests are rated 8 points (5 points for the theoretical test, which will consist of 25 questions and 3 for the practical test); (ii) Continuous assessment throughout the practical classes, each practical class teacher will define in the first practical class which continuous assessment criteria will be applied in their classes (2 points); (iii) Continuous assessment, practical work on the application of knowledge acquired in the introductory seminar to the angiology and vascular surgery to be submitted on the Moodle platform (2 point).
There is no minimum grade in any of the assessment components. If the student misses one of the two exams, or does not pass one of the components, the student will have to present to the Final Exam.

FINAL EXAM. It covers the entire subject of Systematic Anatomy 1 and consists of a theoretical and practical test, with a quotation of 10 values for the theoretical test, 6 values for the practical test and 4 values for the continuous assessment. There is no minimum grade in any of the assessment components.
Both the practical and theoretical components of the exam will be divided into two parts corresponding to each of the midterm evaluations. Thus, students who did not pass during the evaluation distributed throughout the semester may choose to take only one of the practical and/or theoretical parts.

For students presenting to the final exam who attended the subject in previous years, the quotation will be 14 points for the theoretical exam and 6 points for the practical test. The theoretical test will consist of 50 questions. In this case, the theoretical exam has a minimum score of 9.5.

If the student is not successful at the final exam, he or she will have the opportunity to take the recourse/appeal exam.

APPEAL EXAMINATION. For approval and improvement of the grade of the students who attended the course unit during the current academic year: It covers all the contents of Systematic Anatomy 2 and consists of a theoretical and practical test, with a quotation of 10 points for the theoretical test (50 multiple-answer questions), 6 points for the practical test and 4 points for the continuous assessment (2 points for practical classes + 2 points for the seminar). None of the components has a minimum grade. Both the practical and theoretical components of the exam will be divided into two parts corresponding to each of the mid-term evaluations. Thus, students who did not pass or who wish to improve their grade may choose to take only one of the practical and/or theoretical parts of the exam. The higher classification in each part will prevail.

For approval of students who attended the course unit in previous academic years (with attendance in practical classes in at least 75% of the classes): the quotation will be 14 points for the theoretical exam and 6 points for the practical exam. In this case, the theoretical exam will have a minimum mark of 9.5.

INTERIM TESTS:

In all partial tests, a minimum classification of 50% of the total score is required. All practical tests consist of identifying 20 anatomical structures from the Department of Anatomy's assets. Theoretical tests will consist of multiple answer questions (5 points, the student can only mark 1 point, the wrong ones do not discount). Subjects that are evaluated in the exam of the interim week will be excluded from the evaluation of the final week of the semester.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Students must carry out a preliminary study of the available anatomical specimens before presenting themselves in the practical classes of the course, as they will be evaluated on the quality their preparation.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

All exams performed in Special Term will be done exclusively through ORAL TEST by two professors.

Classification improvement

It covers all the contents of Systematic Anatomy 2 and consists of a theoretical and practical test, with a quotation of 10 points for the theoretical test (50 multiple-answer questions), 6 points for the practical test and 4 points for the continuous assessment (2 points for practical classes + 2 points for the seminar). None of the components has a minimum grade. Both the practical and theoretical components of the exam will be divided into two parts corresponding to each of the mid-term evaluations. Thus, students who wish to improve their grade may choose to take only one of the practical and/or theoretical parts of the exam. The higher classification in each part will prevail.
