Objectives

The basic curriculum, essential for all physicians, specifies the areas considered to be of special relevance in the Psychiatry Curricular Unit of the Integrated Master in Medicine at ICBAS.

 

Thus, the teaching of Psychiatry has been structured in such a way that students can have access to fundamental program content in various contexts. These include: theoretical, theoretical-practical and practical classes in which the patient is the constant and indispensable factor for learning approach, communication and intervention techniques with the person in distress. These learnings have as a fundamental element the inclusion of socio-affective aspects and an holistic approach to the patient. The primary concern is learning to assess the person and their social, family and affective environments. Teaching will always be oriented towards reducing psychiatry related stigma, individual training, increasing literacy in psychiatry and mental health, respect for fundamental citizenship rights, prevention and promoting mental health in different contexts of life.

 

It must provide an adequate level of psychiatric knowledge, with clinical skills and knowledge of appropriate interventions, to provide an effective assessment and therapeutic interventions for all patients.

 

Newly trained physicians should be able to recognize, assess and diagnose the most prevalent mental disorders, intervene effectively in psychiatric emergency situations and know how and when to refer patients with psychiatric conditions to senior doctors or specialists.

 

The main specific objectives for teaching clinical psychiatry are:      
     1- Provide students with knowledge and understanding of the main psychiatric disorders and the relationship between mental health and psychiatry with other medical areas. Likewise, it must provide knowledge about the principles underlying modern psychiatric theory and about the most commonly used treatments;        
    2- Promote the development of the necessary skills, to apply the acquired knowledge, in everyday clinical situations (capacity for diagnostic evaluation, most usual therapeutic guidelines, criteria for referencing to the specialty);     
       3- Development of the necessary skills to respond, in an empathetic way, to mental problems, illnesses and psychological suffering in all medical contexts;       
     4- Provide knowledge that allows students to deal adequately with their own health and well-being. In short, it should give students the basic knowledge of Psychiatry, namely its insertion in the context of medical sciences, its methodological and clinical specificities, as well as the clinical aspects of mental illnesses with the greatest epidemiological relevance.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students should be able to identify the main psychiatric syndromes, define a clinical orientation and their therapeutic approach, as well as to identify the need for referral to Psychiatry.

Teaching methods and learning activities

1. Theoretical classes

 - 6 hours in the introductory "Primer" and 13 hours throughout the semester;

 

-Class modality in person.  
-Content sharing in the moodle platform (power-pint, videos, clinical cases, specific scientific bibliography).

1. Theoretical-Practical / Practical classes

 - 13 weeks: 3.5 h per week;

 - Classroom modality in person.  

 - Written work (e.g. monograph / free theme / article) by students on a topic within Psychiatry.

-Theoretical-practical and practical classes will be held at Hospital Magalhãe Lemos.

Eligibility for exams

Presence for all students is required, therefore only 1/4 fouls are allowed.

Minimum 9.5 values in the final exam (60 minutes)

Calculation formula of final grade

1. Continuous Practical Assessment (50%)

- For all students, the frequency of practical classes is mandatory, so only 1/4 absences are allowed.

- Each parameter is eliminatory.

a) Continuous Assessment (attendance, professional attitude, behavior, teacher assessment) (7 points)

 b) Monograph (Theme in the field of Psychiatry) + Knowledge (6 points)

c) Clinical History + Clinical and Communication Capacity (7 points)

 

2. Theoretical assessment with final exam (50%)

- Final in-person exam or alternatively Moodle exam, according to the evolution of the pandemic and institutional guidelines; Minimum grade of 9.5 in the final exam.
