Objectives

The knowledge about prophylaxis, diagnosis and treatment of the most common diseases of locomotor system, namely traumatic, congenital, development and degenerative. The “Practical Lessons” are preceded by combined theoretical lessons “Theoretical Primer”.

Learning outcomes and competences

Be able to evaluate clinical background of patients with pathology of locomotor system.

Be able to perform physical examination of patients with osteo-articular and neurologic diseases.

Be able to establish diagnosis and treatment proposals, conservative or surgical, for patients with orthopedic or traumatic diseases.

Be able to establish a rehabilitation program for patients with traumatic osteo-articular, muscle, tendon and ligaments and vertebromedular, as well as patients submitted to conservative or surgical treatment for orthopedic lesions.

Working method

Program

Theoretical Primer

Anatomical, histological and physiologic concepts applied to the discipline. Introduction to biomechanics. Description of human bipodalic gait and its influence with osteoporosis  in the genesis of more common fractures. Mechanism and classification of fractures. Bone healing and methods of treatment of fractures in childhood, young adult and elderly. Fracture complications.

Osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis and other articular diseases.

Osteoarticular infection.

Metabolic and bone development diseases.

Diseases of spine. Biomechanics of spine. Physiopathology of degenerative disc disease and its rule in common back pain. Clinics, imaging and treatment of the more common diseases.

Diseases of upper limb. Biomechanics and physiopathology of rotator cuff muscles. Clinics, imaging and treatment of the more common diseases.

Diseases of lower limb. Biomechanics and physiopathology of hip and the other loading joints. Chronology of hip, knee, ankle and foot pathologies from birth till oldness. Clinics, imaging and treatment of the more common diseases.

Rehabilitation of the patient with pathology of locomotor system. Physical agents and Kinesiotherapy.Exercise systems: muscle, effector organ; Nervous system, control; Energetic systems: cardiac, respiratory and metabolic.Muscular fatigue. Peripheral and central effects of exercise. Resistance and strength training. Particularities relative to age and pathology.Neurorehabilitation: Treatment of spinal cord and peripheral neurological diseases.

Practical lessons

Physical examination of patients present in outpatient’s clinics, wards, operating theatre and emergency.

Evidence for:

Physical examination of locomotor system.

Clinical and subsidiary exam evaluation of the more common diseases of orthopedics and traumatology. Surgical approaches and technics in Orthopedics and Traumatology.

On clinical field, Department of Anatomy and at the Simulation Center workshops on immobilization techniques: bandage, plaster cast and orthotics, arthrocentesis, intra and periarticular infusion technics and arthroscopy.

On clinical field, Department of Anatomy and the Simulation Center familiarization with medical devices (i.e. implants)  used by Orthopedics in the treatment of traumatic, congenital and development

Establishment of basic programs of rehabilitation with definition of objectives and functional prognosis.

The final classification should be the arithmetical mean of written test and pratical evaluation

Minimal classification = 9,5

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

The students with status for that should be submitted to a final written exam and/or oral exam, according the Coordinator´s criterion.

Classification improvement

1 – on continuous evaluation, by repeating the practical lessons
