- Understand and apply the classification and staging system of neoplasia
- Identify the main routine methods for the study and diagnosis of neoplasia
- Recognize the main types of human neoplasia and their main clinical and pathological characteristics
- Recognize the contribution of Pathology for the diagnostic and therapeutic approach of cancer patients
Learning outcomes and competences
- Acquire basic concepts about the classification of the main types of human neoplasia
- Adequately use the clinical concepts and classification terminology of human neoplasia
- Recognize the methods used for the diagnosis of cancer and their limitations
- Identify the main characteristics of the most common types of human neoplasia
- Apply the general concepts about Oncological Pathology to the research field of Oncology in which the student will develop the dissertation
Working method
Presencial
Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)
Those required for admission in the Master’s Programme
Program
-
- Neoplasia: basic concepts and classification; methods of study
- Carcinogenic agents: chemical, physical and biological
- Biology of the neoplastic cell: transformation, growth and progression; mechanisms of invasion, angiogenesis and metastization; neoplasia/stroma interactions; immunity and cancer
- Molecular bases of cancer and mechanisms of deregulation of cancer-related genes: chromosomal and genetic alterations
- Key models of human cancer: integration of the concepts of Oncobiology in the study of breast, prostate, lung, gastric, colorectal, prostatic, cutaneous, cervical and hematolymphoid cancer, emphasizing epidemiological, clinical and therapeutical impact.
Mandatory literature

Teaching methods and learning activities
- Theoretical-practical sessions: exposition and discussion of the main themes of the Curricular Unit, emphasizing the clinical relevance of the concepts and their present or future application. The interaction between students and teachers, through active discussion, is stimulated during these sessions.
- Seminars: presentation and discussion of thematic issues on Oncological Pathology, presented by groups of two students. Seminars will take place at the end of the theoretical-practical sessions.

Calculation formula of final grade
Assessment components
- “Theoretical-practical evaluation” component (TPEC): Test consisting on multiple choice questions, based on the theoretical-practical sessions, classified from 0 to 20. Students are approved in the TPEC if their classification equals to or exceeds 9.50 / 20.
- “Seminar evaluation” component (SEC): based on the evaluation of the presentation of seminars, previously scheduled for each practical class. The participation of all students in the discussion of each seminar will also be evaluated. This classification is expressed from 0 to 20, and students are approved in the SEC if their classification equals to or exceeds 9.50 / 20.
Calculation of the final grade
Approval in the Curricular Unit of Oncological Pathology implies a classification equal to or exceeding 9.50 / 20 in both components of the evaluation (TPEC and SEC).
A negative result in any of the components will lead to disapproval.
The final classification of the curricular unit (FCCU) is calculated according to the formula:
FCCU = 0.5 x TPEC + 0.5 x SEC
Examinations or Special Assignments
No special evaluation events or assignments are foreseen.
