Objectives

Upon the successful conclusion of the curricular unit, the student must be able to:

  1. To master the principles of organ donation for transplantation;
  2. Understand that the efficiency of transplantation depends on a number of advances in transplantation immunology, on the handling of several immunosuppressive drugs, on the interpretation of laboratory tests results and imaging results and on ever increasing technical improvements in surgery techniques;
  3. Apply a set of demanding and rigorous measures for evaluation and selection of transplant candidates;
  4. Monitor the patient on the waiting list, in the immediate postoperative period and after post-discharge ;
  5. Understand the ethical norms, as well as national policy regarding organ donation.

Learning outcomes and competences

Considered essential in the learning of Transplantation Medicine is a basic theoretical knowledge of:

  1. Natural history of the different stages of different diseases that can have indication for transplantation.
  2. Theoretical knowledge about immune tolerance and immunosuppression.
  3. Evoluation and treatment of the infections leading to complications.

The practical learning experience extends through the following stages:

  1. Organ collection
  2. Knowledge of national policy on organ donation
  3. Organ extraction
  4. Medical evaluation of a candidate for kidney or liver transplant
  5. Study of the disease and its complications
  6. Study of co morbidities
  7. Assessment of addictive behaviors
  8. Psychological and social evaluation
  9. Management of the transplantation waiting list
  10. Medical monitoring of patients on the waiting list
  11. Transplantation - surgery
  12. Monitoring of the patients in the immediate postoperative and late medical and surgical complications
  13. Post-discharge follow up.
