Objectives

The objective of the optional Unit of Angiology and Vascular Surgery is to provide to students of Integrated Master Degree in Medicine of the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Porto, a complement in the acquisition of knowledge in the area of vascular pathology, basic theoretical and practical training acquired  in the Module of Angiology and Vascular Surgery of the Curricular Unit of Surgery II.
Thus, in addition to deepening knowledge in the areas of peripheral obstructive arterial disease, aneurysmal arterial disease, acute limb ischemia, extra-cranial cerebrovascular disease, venous thromboembolism and chronic venous insufficiency of the lower limbs (varicose veins), the student should have contact with other pathologies, namely with the clinical characteristics and therapeutic needs of diabetic foot, aortic dissection, renovascular hypertension, vascular trauma with a particular emphasis on iatrogenic lesions , hyperhidrosis, vascular malformations, limb lymphedema, diagnostic methods in vascular pathology and therapeutic alternative in  medical as well in  endovascular, , conventional and endoscopic surgery.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the learning process, the student should be able to diagnose the different pathologies by preparing a clinical history, requesting the complementary diagnostic tests required to establish the definitive diagnosis, proposing appropriate medical therapy for each clinical situation, knowing the criteria that justify referral of the patient to specialized evaluation by the Angiology Specialist and Vascular Surgery, and to know the methodology of follow-up of patients submitted to different types of surgical treatment.

Working method

Program

The optional Unit program is carried out by attending the regular activities of the Angiology and Vascular Surgery Service, carried out in its different outpatient clini8c , in its ward in its vascular diagnostic laboratories and in theatre . There is a commitment of all professionals for its execution. The student's time of exposure to the activities is in a period of two hours in a week  in a  period of six weeks.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The teaching is based on the theoretical training program defined for the Optional Unit, and as a practical activity that will be carried out with the collaboration of a counselor specifically appointed for each student. All students must contact with patients  in the ward , outpatient clinic , with  vascular laboratory and theatre.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, teaching / learning methodologies will depend on the existing epidemiological situation and we can have one of the 3 scenarios:

A. Face-to-face - classes will take place in the usual manner

B. Blended format for contact hours:

. Theoretical classes will be held with presence of some students or totally remotely via Zoom in a synchronous way.

. TP classes will be held with presence of some students or totally remotely via Zoom in a synchronous way with discussion of clinical cases.

. Practical classes: the groups will be divided into two parts, half should have contact with the real patient and the other half with the virtual patient or perform another activity indicated by the teacher, alternating the following week.

C. Distance learning - this model will only be applied if the conditions for semi-face-to-face teaching are impossible due to pandemic and will be done entirely with the use of virtual patients and digital platforms.
