Objectives
This optional discipline is intended for those who take pleasure in being attentive and curious about the most recently published scientific findings, particularly those with medical implications. Thus, the regent (Artur Águas) and the students will embark on a joint research trip on the net of what is being published in scientific journals, looking for results that have the potential to increase medical knowledge or its application to human health. Participants in this optional discipline should be vulnerable to the taste for going in search of the unknown: the discipline has no previous program. Through the search on the Internet, namely on the site Science Direct, will be selected by the students and the conductor recently published scientific articles and among those chosen those that seem more interesting for those who want to be a doctor. The chosen articles will be the subject of a brief presentation, supported by PowerPoint, and general discussion about its significance and importance in medicine.
Learning outcomes and competences
It is intended to create a taste for the autonomous research of newly published scientific advances. Critical analysis of the selected scientific papers will also be stimulated, as well as speculation about its importance for the medicine of the future.Working method
Presencial
Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)
The major prerequisite is having a taste for going in search of the unknown and being available to go "hunting" for scientific articles on the internet. The students have to attend 75% of the lectures in order ro be accepted for the final exam. Each group of 1-4 students has the additional requirement of choosing a recent scientific articcle and presenting it to the colleagues during a class, this presentation getting 4 points out of 20 of final evaluation. The value of the presentation is definet by the lecturer.
Program
This course has no previously defined program as it is intended to identify scientific articles that have been published internationally in the weeks preceding or accompanying the course of the course.
Mandatory literature
Science Direct; How to find mdecicam advances in internet
Comments from the literature
There are no books recommended for this opcional subjet becaus it will look at adavances in medicine made in the weeks before class.
Teaching methods and learning activities
In the first class, to give the kick off of this game of hunting, the regent of the discipline will present, to Poiado in PowerPoints, some scientific articles that he himself chose through internet search. Your critical presentation of these articles will be followed by a period of open discussion with all students present. From this first lesson, all students (and the regent) are invited to weekly bring PowerPoints by reporting their findings on the net of scientific papers interesting to medicine.Evaluation Type

Eligibility for exams
In the last (or the before last lesson, to be combined) 10 of the articles presented during previous classes will be chosen to be the target of 25 multiple-choice questions, which will constitute the final exam. Of t
hese 10 articles, 5 will be chosen by voting of the students that participated in the discipline; the other 6 will be selected by the lecturer (the questions of the final exam will not have to encompass all od the 12 articles).Calculation formula of final grade
Depending in 80% on the number o correct answers to the 25 questions of the final written exam and in 20% to the presentation of a scientific article by 1 to 4 students.
Examinations or Special Assignments
Students will have as a volunteer task to search the net for recent scientific articles of medical interest, to select some that they consider interesting, to make a short PowerPoint about them and to present them in one of the classes. If the student is not available to participate in these tasks, thank you not to enroll in the course (the chair is optional!).Internship work/project
Does not apply.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
Written exam of 25 multiple-choice questions (80%) and article presentation (20%). The student may bring with him/her pritted information for the exame; the use of computers or smart-phones is not allowed during the exam.
Classification improvement
Upon oral exam with the professor.
Observations
If in the choice of your optional discipline you want to attend a discipline whose contents are known at the beginning and that will be taught through classical theoretical classes, then do not enroll in this course.
