Objectives

Objectives:

- To provide students information about etiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs, diagnosis, therapy and prevention of farm animals diseases

- To inform students about the impact of these diseases in the farm economy and how appropriate measures can reduce or eliminate that impact

Learning outcomes and competences

Skills:

- To identify the main diseases that affect farm animals

- To detect farm management errors that can originate disease and economical losses

- Guidelines to effectively elucidate the farmer about these diseases and their consequences

 

Attitude:

- Understand the role of a Veterinary Doctor in the food animal business
- Use of team work to solve problems and to protect animal welfare.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical lectures:

Used mainly to support the independent study of students. Main subjects of course will be presented and discussed with the help of Power Point presentations and videos.

Practical lectures:

These classes will consist in the simulation of clinical cases in farms. The objective is to provide students with the ability to perform a diagnosis, to choose an adequate therapy and to suggest control measures.

Quizzes about the subjects given and videos shown will also be carried out using Kahoot.

Eligibility for exams

Students must attend, at least, 9 of the presented practical classes.

Calculation formula of final grade

PARTIAL EXAM:

All students can attend a theoretical partial exam (written) in the week of Mid-term evaluations (intercalary evaluations). This partial exam will be worth 8 points. In the final theoretical exam, and if a minimum score of 3.8 is obtained in the partial exam, the student will be granted the choice to perform a partial exam comprising only the remaining theoretical contents. In this case, the contents to be evaluated in the final exam will be worth 12 points, with 5.7 as the minimum approval grade. These conditions apply to both First and Second exam seasons.

If the minimum grade (3.8) is not obtained the Mid-term evaluations, only in the Second Season the students will have the opportunity to do it again, that is, it will only be possible to do the second part (quoted for 12 points) in the First Season. This impossibility also applies to students who choose to drop out after attending to the partial exam in the week of Mid-term evaluations. Therefore, it will only be possible to do the first part in the First Season if the student did not attend to the partial exam in the week of Mid-term evaluations. Thus, the same number of opportunities will be ensured (2) to do the two partial tests.




FINAL THEORETICAL EXAM:

All students, who attended at least 9 of the presented practical classes, can perform the final theoretical exam, which will be worth 20 points, 100% of the final grade, and divided in two parts: first part quoted for 8 points ​​with 3.8 as the minimum grade, and the second part quoted for 12 points ​​with 5.7 as the minimum grade. However, if students attended to the partial test in the week of Mid-term evaluations, they will only be able to attend to the second part of the exam in the First Season. This impossibility also applies to students who chose to drop out after attending to the partial exam in the week of Mid-term evaluations. Thus, the same number of opportunities (2) to do the two partial exams will be ensured.

Regardless of the exam season (Mid-term, First or Second), the student will only obtain approval for each of the parts with the respective minimum grades, 3.8 ​​in the first and 5.7 ​​in the second. Therefore, matching or exceeding the minimum grades for both parts is mandatory in order to obtain approval in the Curricular Unit.

Classification improvement

In the Second Season of exams, and after enrollment in the Student Services, the improvement of the classification can be carried out in both parts of the exam or only in one.
