Objectives

The student must achieve theoretical and practical knowledge on the current surgical techniques used in equine, swine and ruminants. The student must be able to select the anesthetic protocols as well as the pre and post   therapeutic protocols to differente clinical situations.

Learning outcomes and competences

During the realization of practical classes students should know and perform the procedures described pre-surgical, surgical and post-surgical, inherent to different surgical techniques performed in cattle, horses and pigs

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

The prior knowledge from other disciplines, like anatomy, clinical semiology, anesthesiology and surgical semiology  are essential  for understanding  theoretical and pratical lessons.
The knowledge of the different surgical techniques performed in cattle, horses and pigs, taught during lectures, must be present during the  practical classes.

Program

BOVINE:

Reproductive:

· Cesarean and resuscitation of the calf.

· Hysterectomy in Cattle.

· Castration of calves

Gastrointestinal:

· Displacement of the abomasum to the left.

. Torsion of the abomasum.

· Ruminotomia.

Torsion of the cecum.

· Small bowel resection.

· Umbilical hernias.

· Atresia ani, Atresia coli

Mammary gland:

· Teats lacerations .

· Teats amputation .

· Correction of anomalies from the Teat.

· Extraction of supernumerary teats.

Musculo-skeletal / appendix:

· Congenital joint stiffness.

· Spastic paresis of gastrocnemius.

· Amputation of the nail.

· Cosmetic dehorning.

Respiratory:

· Tracheostomy permanent.

Urinary:

· Perineal urethrostomy in calves

· Channel Urachal persistent


HORSES:

Musculo-skeletal system:

· Desmotomy medial patellar ligament.

· Tenotomy of cuniano.

· Desmotomy distal ligament accessory.

· Proximal desmotomy accessory ligament.

· Desmotomy superficial flexor tendon / deep.

Eligibility for exams

It is mandatory to attend  theoretical and practical lessons.  Students are only be admitted to the exam if attended more than 75% of lectures and 75% practical classes.

Calculation formula of final grade

 Final exam grade (90%)  and  pratical procedures record ( 10%).

Examinations or Special Assignments

Pratical procedures record: the student must perform and record a minimal number of clinical and surgical procedures during partical classes.
