Objectives

Management practices of livestock species and horses. Knowledge of clinical signs of disease in livestock animals and horses of interest. Nomenclature of clinical exam. Clinical exam. Features, pathophysiology, history, the physical examination. Knowledge and practice protocols for the investigation of major organ systems. Laboratory procedures for blood, bone marrow and urine analysis.

Learning outcomes and competences

Capacity to make a general clinic examination and a clinical examination of the several systems and organs.

Capacity to decide for complementary means of diagnose.

Development of a clinical thinking concerning the large animals’ species.

Clinic hematology - laboratory analysis and interpretations of the results obtained. Urine analysis.

Digestive syndromes in ruminants and horses. Exploration of the digestive associated glands. Examination of the genito-urinary apparatus. Examination of the mammary gland in ruminants. Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical classes (2 hours / week). Practical classes with animals in the large animal clinic (Vairão) and the Laboratory practical classes at ICBAS-UP.

Eligibility for exams

It is considered that a student attends the course unit if, having been regularly enrolled, he did not exceed the limit of absences corresponding to 25% of the practical classes. It will only be given a tolerance of 15 minutes for the beginning of the practical class, it means that the students in the first 15 minutes should be fully equipped (with digital thermometer, stethoscope and robe / monkey).

The frequency is saved for 3 consecutive school years. Students with student worker status are exempt from practical classes. If they lose their status as a student worker, they must obtain attendance at the course unit.

Student associative leaders, whenever they wish to justify a lack of commitments inherent in their status, must submit an application to the Pedagogical Council

Calculation formula of final grade

Theoretical exam - 10 out f 20 (50% of the final)

Practical exam - 10 out of 20 (50% of the final).

The theoretical and practical exam might be oral or written.
The students must have approval in both parts (theoretical and practical). Both parts are eliminatory.

Observations

The students should confer the institutional email, since important messages from the teachers are sent by dynamic email.
