Objectives

1. To enlighten the students regarding professional rights and duties, according to deontological and ethical rules described in the Portuguese Veterinary Deontologic Code and relevant literature in animal bioethics;

2. To present a set of rules and guidelines that aim to ensure animal welfare and the respective ethical-professional responsibility of Veterinary Medicine professionals.

Learning outcomes and competences

1. Knowledge about the Code of Conduct of Veterinary Surgeons and the current national and international legislation on animal welfare;

2. Reflexion on the rights and duties of Veterinary Practitioners according to ethical and deontological rules expressed in the current Code of Conduct and reference literature in the area of animal bioethics;

3. Reflexion on the ethical-professional responsibility of the Veterinary Surgeons on animal welfare;

4. Development of an ethical conscience in the exercise of the veterinary profession;

5. Understanding that there are different perspectives and approaches to the same ethical dilemma;

6. Promotion of critical thinking in addressing different ethical issues involving the use of animals;

7. Promotion of self-awareness for the permanent need to update knowledge in the area.

Calculation formula of final grade

Evaluation formula: 

Final grade (20) = 0,6 x group-based project work grade + 0,2 x presentation grade + 0,2 x Moodle activities(exercises grade

1. Group-based project work to be presented in seminars or individual work to be presented in the final exam - Monography (12/20): 1.1. Organization and structure (4/12); 1.2. Writing (2/12); 1.3. Originality (2/12); 1.4. Graphics (2/12); 1.5. References (2/12).

2. Oral presention of the group-based project work (4/20);

3. Will be proposed 4 exercises/individual activities in Moodle (4/20), 1 value each (announced in a timely manner).

There is no minimum grade for each of the evaluation components (also not mandatory); to approve, a total classification of 9,5 values should be achieved.

Peer evaluation (monography+oral presentation, 16/20): The group decides which score to assign to each of the elements, and the group average has to be exactly the same as the grade given by the teachers.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Exercises/individual activities in Moodle. The monography (group-based or individual work) should be submitted in Moodle, via Turnitin.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Similar to the other evaluation procedures but the work will be individual. Taking place only at the time of appeal examinations.
