Objectives

1. To rationalize living systems in terms of basic Chemistry principles. To present Biological Chemistry as a subset of Chemistry.

2. To correlate knowledge from Organic and Inorganic Chemistry with Biological Chemistry.

3. To aquire specific knowledge about biological molecules and and cellular chemistry organization.

Learning outcomes and competences

1. To have the basic concepts of Chemistry, except for chemical kinetics.

2. Ability to solve basic Chemistry problems.

3. Knowledge of the biologically important functional groups of carbon compounds and basic notions of conformation and stereochemistry.

1. Molecular structure Chemical bond models, stereoisomery, molecular conformation.

2. Bioenergetics Thermodynamics. Principles of thermodynamics. Gibbs function and chemical potential. Chemical equilibrium, application to Bronsted acid-base reactions. Energetics of redox reactions. Energetics of transport processes across biological membranes. Application of Thermodynamics Principles and Concepts to biological systems.

3. Bioinorganics Metalic elements in biological systems: properties and regulation.

4. Bioorganics Alkanes and cycloalkanes. Conformation and conformation analysis of alkanes and cycloalkanes. Conformation of cyclohexane. Reactions of free radicals. Alkenes: Stability of Alkenes. Addition Reactions. Stability of carbocations. Electrophiles and nucleophiles. Regioselective reactions. Stereochemistry and quiral molecules. Stereogenic carbons. Enantiomers and diastereoisomers. The R and S system. Optical activity. Fischer projection. Stereospecific reactions.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical classes, using Powerpoint presentations. Theoretical-practical classes of problem solving and matters related with laboratorial works. Laboratorial classes where the students work in groups of up to 3, following a written protocol.

Final mark (F), available options:

Option 1: Partial assessments A3 and A4:
F = ( A1 + A2 ) / 2

Option 2: Exam E1:

All assessments are composed of a theoretical evaluation (18 points) and a practical theoretical evaluation (2 points). Assessments A2 and E1 are simultaneous and mutually exclusive.

Observations

Students are not allowed to enter the classes 10 minutes after its beggining time. Adequate lab coats are mandatory in laboratorial classes.
