Objectives

Students and future engineers must become familiar with the primary and secondary functions of the major physiological systems (cardiovascular, respiratory and lung), through its mechanisms of action, the relationship between them and the importance of each to homeostasis, from an engineering perspective; they must understand the differences and complementarity between the 2 main control systems of the body, nervous and endocrine systems.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students must be able to formulate practical solutions of engineering to solve biological disorders (i.e., disease) while should realize how biological solutions found in large systems can potentially serve to solve traditional problems of engineering.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Pré-requesitos: Biologia Celular e Quimica,
Co-requesitos: Anatomia

Program

Introduction: general and cellular basis of physiology. Metabolism and temperature regulation.

Physiology of  heart and circulation: the heart as a pump; origin of heartbeat and electrical activity of the heart; dinamics of of blood and lymph flow; cardiovascular regulatory mechanisms; circulation through special regions; cardiovascular homeostasis in health and disease.

Renal function: urine formation by the kidney;  regulation of extracellular fluid composition and volume;  regulation of acid-base balance; renal diseases and diuretics.

Respiratory  physiology: pulmonary function; gas transport between the lungs and the tissues; regulation of respiration; respiratory adjustments in health and disease.

Regulatory role of the endocrine  and the nervous systems in the cardiovascular, renal and respiratory systems.

Mandatory literature

Hall John E.; Guyton and Hall textbook of medical physiology. ISBN: 978-1-4557-7005-2

Teaching methods and learning activities

In TP classes, students work in groups of 2-3 in order to stimulate discussion of the themes and how to work in a team; along the UC and in parallel with the theoretical approach students are invited to simulate, in computer, changes of physiological and biochemical parameters of the various systems, comparing results with the predictions made on the basis of theoretical knowledge

Evaluation Type

Total: 100,00

Eligibility for exams

To be approved in the TP course (3/4 presences)

Calculation formula of final grade

Students can opt to the accomplishment of parcelar tests (2) or the final examination. The final examination (or parcelar tests) consists of of multiple choice questions test. To be approved students must obtain in the theoretical test a note equal or superior to 10/20.
