Objectives

This course unit aims to provide students with knowledge about fundamental concepts of the structure (Anatomy) and microstructure (Histology) of the various components of the human body, in order to acquaint future engineers with the language and fundamental medical concepts related to the human body.

Learning outcomes and competences

The  goal of the discipline of Human Anatomy and Physiology is to provide concrete knowledge (hands-on) about the architecture of the human body and how this structural arrangement relates to the functions performed by each organ or organ system.

The curricular unit will be explored in two complementary strands: anatomy and histology.

In its anatomical aspect, the discipline involves observation and manipulation of parts of a corpse; In its histological aspect, it is intended that the student analyzes histological preparations of some organs of different systems.

1. Human body posture and movement
The human skeleton. Joint structure, and the great joints of the human body.  Muscular tissue and human locomotion; the great muscular groups of the human body. 

2. The circulatory system
The heart, valves and heart’s blood supply. Large arterial and venous vessels. Relationship between the lymphatic system and the venous system.

3. The human gastrointestinal tract
The human gastrointestinal tract and its glands: structure and general functions of the organs. Study of some histological aspects of this system.

4. Urinary and reproductive system
The kidney and urinary tracts: structure and general functions. Study of some histological aspects of this system.
Differences and similarities between the organization and functions of the female and male reproductive systems.

5. Respiratory system
Upper and lower airways and blood haematosis. Study of some histological aspects of this system. 

6. Nervous system
Structural organization of the central  nervous system.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The discipline aims at the knowledge of the structure of the human body (macro and microstructure). To achieve this goal, a summary of the anatomical organization of the human body will be taught, using, in practical classes, cadaveric parts and tissue preparations observed by microscopy.

Calculation formula of final grade

Terms of frequency: Students have to attend a minimum number of classes (according to the general rules of the University)

Formula Evaluation: I. EVALUATION DURING THE SEMESTER 1. Assessment of student participation in practical classes - 2 values. 2. Evaluation to be carried out in the middle of the semester: Theoretical exam consisting of multiple-choice questions and / or short answer questions - 9 values (minimum score of 7 points). 3. Evaluation carried out at the end of the semester: Theoretical exam consisting of multiple-choice questions and / or short answer questions - 9 values (minimum score of 7 points). If the student obtains a minimum of 9.5 in all of these assessments shall be exempt from the final exam.

II. FINAL EXAM For students who have not obtained a grade equal to or higher than 9.5 on the evaluations conducted during the semester. For these students none of the marks obtained during the semester will be considered. The final exam consists of a theoretical test with multiple choice questions and / or short answer questions.
