Objectives

This course unit aims to familiarise students with basic knowledge in the functions of the immune system. Besides, it aims at showing them the most common models of investigation and technology used in the study of Immunology.
Students should develop their critical skills, in order to interpret the data referred in the bibliography. They should also acquire basic knowledge in this area, in order to understand the concept of infection and its methodology of study.

Learning outcomes and competences

Knowledge about the immune system namely when faced with infectious agents. Ability to critically analyze and interpret scientific data and analytical results. Correct use of the field nomenclature.

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Basic Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology.

4. Adaptive immune response; Initiation, consummation and control (2 classes)

6. Autoimmunity and allergy

8. Infections caused by intra and extracellular bacteria
9. Infections caused by virus
10. Infections caused by fungi and protozoa
11. Cellular Microbiology
12. Microbial virulence Factors
