Objectives

Transmission of knowledge about artisanal and industrial fisheries, in the world, in Continental Portugal and at the islands (Azores & Madeira); fishing vessels. Introduction of stock assessment and management of fisheries.

GMWeber: Theoretical lessons
History of fishing since the stone age until modern times; classification of arts and catching methods: definitions, collecting by hand and foot, spearing and harpooning; fishing with anesthetics, fishing with lines and hooks, with traps, with scoop nets, trawls, purse seine nets, drive-in fishery, lift nets, throwing nets, entangling nets and gillnets, harvesting machines; materials and nets used in fishery: general materials, natural and synthetic fibers, identification systems, meshes and knots, nets and their fabrication; artisanal fishery in Portugal Continental (north, center, south): presentation of arts, utensils, and local fishing boats; fishery of big pelagic species: fishing arts and methods used in continental waters and around the islands of Portugal (Madeira, Azores).

GMW Practical lessons
Study visits to the Maritime Museum in Ílhavo and the trawler St.º André in Gafanha de Nazaré, to Aguda´s beach and Afurada (artisanal and industrial fishery); lessons at the Fishery Museum of the Littoral Station of Aguda: artisanal whale hunting; hunting and fishing utensils of the «Inuits»; spears, arrows and harpoons, freshwater fishing, artisanal and industrial fishing boat models, local artisanal fishery, nets, ancient and modern hooks and artificial baits, floats and weights for nets, net samples, sports fishing, fyke-nets and traps, pots; navigation and oceanographic instruments.

Importance of fisheries resources and their management; evaluation of fish resources: cohort, "stock", life cycle, growth models, size, and first maturity; fishing pattern; selectivity of a fishing net; selectivity curves and size of the 1st capture; non-exploited resource; exploited resource; methods of assessment of resources; fisheries assessment models; biological reference points; regulatory measures; management measures.

Study visit to the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere IPMA in Matosinhos.
