Objectives

To provide students with an understanding of systematic pathology including etiology and pathogenesis of the diseases of domestic and farm animals, as well as some exotic animals, as they relate to veterinary practice. A basic understanding of histopathology and gross pathology of pathological processes involving the alimentary system, liver, pancreas and salivary glands, peritoneum, skin and cardiovascular system. Necropsy technique with sample selection, collection and sending to histopathology laboratory.

Learning outcomes and competences

 

 

Perform a necropsy, select, collect and send pathological samples to histopathological laboratory; write a complete necropsy report; Identify macroscopic lesions and draw up a list of differential diagnosis; Understand the etiopathogeny and recognize the lesions, both macroscopic and microscopic, of pathological processes involving the alimentary system, liver, pancreas and salivary glands, peritoneum, skin and cardiovascular system.

The course will consist on the study of the alimentary system, liver, pancreas and salivary glands, peritoneum, musculoskeletal system, skin and nervous system. Necropsy technique and selection and sending of samples to diagnostic laboratories.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical lectures (Main subjects of course will be presented and discussed with help of iconographic material). Practical lectures (Necropsies with respective writen reports. For interested students, histological examinations of the most relevant cases observed at the necropsy room, will be available).

Eligibility for exams

It is necessary to attend to, at least, 75% of the practical classes to perform the theoretical exam.

Calculation formula of final grade

1) Written theoretical exam (50%) 2) Practical exam(40%) 3)Necropsy reports and continuous evaluation in practical classes(10%).

It is possible to improve each of the parts of classification in a separate way.

Observations

The theoretical examination can only be performed after approving practical examination.
