Objectives

A. To initiate the study of the animal morphology and the student’s contact with animals of several species.
B.To know the morphological characteristics and aptitudes of the principal Portuguese and exotic breeds of animals belonging to bovine, zebu, equine, asinine, mules, sheep, goat, pig, rabbits, poultry, canine and feline species.
C.To know some animal management practices.

8. Equine, asinine and mules species: General characteristics; Portuguese breeds; Principal breeds of the world.
9. Sheep and goat species: General characteristics; Portuguese breeds; Principal breeds in the world
10. Pig species: General characteristics; Portuguese breeds; Principal breeds of the world.
11. Morphological characters of rabbits.
12. Morphological characters of birds.
13. Canine specie: General characteristics; Portuguese breeds; Principal breeds of the world.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The lectures are supported by the use of overheads, slides, videos, and multimedia. The material used in lectures is provided in full to students The practical teaching consists in practical classes at the Campus Agrário de Vairão (horses, cattle, small ruminants and pigs), at the ICBAS Kennel and study visits (Poultry, rabbits and fish).
