Resumo (PT): É desejável, e mesmo necessário, que se faça silêncio nos espaços de leitura das Bibliotecas, para que os leitores possam concentrar-se; que as Bibliotecas sejam lugares onde não haja perturbação alguma que desvie, abusivamente, a sua atenção. Todavia, não há Biblioteca no mundo onde seja possível mantê-lo. Considerando a raiz etimológica do termo, logo se percebe que os livros estão no seu cerne. Os livros têm vida própria. Acima de tudo, têm voz; afirmam-se e falam entre si. Se apenas falassem entre si, talvez, de vez em quando, nos fosse possível encontrar o silêncio procurado. Mas existem os leitores que falam com eles e sem cuja presença os livros não podem passar. ¿O leitor escreve para que seja possível¿ (Manuel Gusmão). Autores e leitores são indissociáveis. É da sua qualidade de seres interdependentes, eternamente votados à partilha do mundo, que vivem as Bibliotecas. Recuperando passagens de alguns escritores, são apresentados testemunhos de cumplicidades, provando que o silêncio não é possível numa Biblioteca. Nos espaços onde coabitam livros e leitores, mesmo que sejam lugares em que apenas encontremos um só livro e um só leitor, as palavras ecoam. É que, se esta não fosse a tónica, o mundo não era nada.

Abstract (EN): Silence is desirable, even necessary, in the Reading Rooms of every Library, so that readers can be focused. Libraries should be places where no noise or sound exists, but, in fact, true silence is impossible, because books do live in Libraries and have lives of their own. They have a voice / voices and interact with each other ¿ not only with each other, but with readers too. Readers speak with them and books cannot live without their presence. ¿The reader writes in order to make it possible¿ (Manuel Gusmão). Authors and readers are inseparable. They share the world in a continuous and endless way. This is, undoubtedly, what takes place in all Libraries. Considering this assumption, writers have been testifying that silence is not possible in a Library. When books and readers meet, words can be heard all over, as if the world inside and outside was one.
