Personal Presentation
Vera Miranda-Gonçalves (VMG) has a BSc degree in Biochemistry (2008), from the University of Coimbra and MSc degree in Health Sciences (2012), from the School of Medicine, University of Minho (SM-UM). VMG obtained a PhD in Health Sciences, from the SM-UM (2016), developing her work at the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute, ICVS (Portugal), and at the Molecular Oncology Research Center, MORC (Brazil), from which emerged significant knowledge about tumor metabolism and monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs). In 2017, VMG started a new position at Research Center of Portuguese Oncology Institute of Porto (CI-IPOP) through a post-doctoral fellowship. Since 2019, she has held a contract as junior researcher at Cancer Biology & Epigenetic Group (CBEG), in which she has gained solid knowledge in cancer epigenetics, urological tumors, and radiotherapy fields. During her scientific career at CI-IPOP, VMG worked in several projects addressing the impact of epigenetics in tumor progression and therapy resistance, and concomitantly their tumor metabolism scientific outputs allowed her to initiate a new independent research line to explore the interplay between epigenetics and tumor metabolism in urological tumors. In her scientific career, Vera Miranda-Gonçalves is author/co-author of 56 papers in international peer-reviewed journals and 4 book chapters with a cumulative impact factor (IF) of 330. Her work has been cited nearly 2014 and she has an h-index of 25.
Her scientific capabilities extended to the supervision/co-supervision of several MSc and PhD students from ICBAS-School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, University of Porto (ICBAS-UP), and she also collaborated on the supervision of ERASMUS Master students. Moreover, VMG lectures “Epigenetics and Cancer Metabolism” and “Fundamentals of CAM assay” for the curricular units of “Epigenetics” and “Experimental cancerization”, respectively, in the MSc/PhD program in Medicine and Molecular Oncology, FMUP, and of the MSc program in Oncology, ICBAS-UP. Further, the lectures “Confocal Microscopy: 3D reconstruction imaging” and “ In vitro and in vivo Experimental models of Radiotherapy” for the curricular unit “Research Techniques in Oncology” of the MSc program in Oncology, ICBAS-UP. Importantly, during 2023, VMG was hired as invited assistant professor at the School of Health Sciences – Polytechnic of Porto (ESS-UP) to lecture on Oncobiology for BSc in Medicinal Biotechnology and BSc in Laboratory Biomedical Sciences. Further, she participated as a guest editor in the special issue “Insights in Tumor Cell Metabolism and Epigenetics” in Metabolites journal from MPDI editor. At CI-IPOP, she was a member of the scientific committee on the “2nd Young Researchers’ Day” and participated in the co-organization of the “Basic Cell Culture Course” and “Introduction to Research Activity CI-IPOP Training Course” at EPOP.
On top of that, at CI-IPOP, VMG was enrolled in the implementation of new protocols and new core facilities. Specifically, in 2019 she was responsible for implementing the chicken chorioallantoic membrane (CAM assay) facility, specifically the establishment, design, and execution of all the procedures for in vivo CAM assay, concerning tumor cell implantation, tumor treatment regimen schedules (chemical compound and ionizing radiation), tumor growth and angiogenesis assessment, as well as ex ovo tumor markers evaluation. Since 2022, in coordination and management activities, she also perform Lab Manager functions having the official role of Risk Manager at CBEG, CI-IPOP, LAB3, including equipment management and maintenance, and the Coordination and implementation of the Risk Management Policy.
