José Alexandre Ferreira obtained a BSc in Chemistry from the University of Aveiro (UA) in 2002 and completed his MSc in 2004 with specialization in glycochemistry. In 2010 he obtained a PhD in Biochemistry from the same university in collaboration the University of Guelph in Canada, exploiting pathogenic bacteria glycans for vaccine development. He then joined the Mass Spectrometry Center of UA as a postdoctoral researcher to address key roles played by protein glycosylation in cancer. In 2012 he left the academia and assumed the coordination of a research team at Portuguese Institute of Oncology of Porto (IPO-Porto), the largest oncology center in Portugal. Between 2016 and 2019 he was also a member the Institute of Research and Innovation in Health (i3S) at the University of Porto, and an invited researcher at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, with the objective of fostering the translation of glycan-based technologies into clinical applications. Since then he established a solid platform for graduate training in oncoglycobiology and currently coordinates several graduate students and a postdoctoral researchers. In 2016, he became an external scientific evaluator for the European commission and other relevant international institutions. Presently we holds a researcher assistant position at IPO-Porto and very recently became the CEO and co-founder of GlycoMatters, a biotech startup devoted to designing innovative solutions for precision oncology. He often lectures in Master and international courses in Glycobiology and Glycochemistry. Has several publications and patents in the fields of precision medicine, oncology, cancer biomarkers and cancer therapeutics. He maintains active collaborations with academia and pharmaceutical industry.
