Mariana Monteiro, is Associate Professor at the Department of Human Anatomy and researcher at the Multidisciplinary Unit for Biomedical Research (UMIB), at Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar (ICBAS), University of Porto. Before joining this Institute, got her medical education from 1990 to 1996 from Faculdade de Medicina do Porto (Oporto University Medical School), trained and earned in 2005 her Board Certificate in Endocrinology at Hospital de Santo António, Porto. Mariana Monteiro got her PhD in 2007 with the thesis “Mechanisms of gastro-intestinal hormone induced weight loss”, at ICBAS, University of Porto.
Mariana Monteiro has a particular interest in Obesity, both in its clinical and research aspects. During the Specialist training worked at the Obesity Outpatient Clinic based at Hospital Santo Antonio, Porto, where developed extensive clinical research in obese patients submitted to bariatric surgery. After being a Visiting Research Fellow, sponsored by Gulbenkian Foundation, in Department of Metabolic Medicine at Imperial College, directed by Prof. S. Bloom, a worldwide recognized expert and a reference laboratory in the field of gastro-intestinal hormones and in appetite regulatory pathways, has developed further expertise in basic research techniques and has also published several papers on this issue. Currently works in the Multidisciplinary Unit for Biomedical Research of ICBAS, University of Porto where supervises the research of basic scientists researching on ghrelin and NPY and works in Hospital de Entre-o-Douro e Vouga in a Muldisciplinary Obesity Outpatient Clinic as Endocrinology Consultant and Clinical Researcher.
Mariana Monteiro has a special interest in Obesity and Appetite regulatory pathways. In the last years has focused her investigation efforts in two main areas:
1. Study of the mechanism of action of gastro-intestinal hormones interfering in appetite regulatory pathways, and physiology analysis.
2. Study of weight loss induced by bariatric surgery, as a model for the study of mechanisms leading to negative energy balance.
Up to now, the research profile of Mariana Monteiro is translational in nature. Her interdisciplinary working group consequently uses a variety of clinical and experimental approaches, spanning from clinical research to animal neuroscientific methods to understand whether and how regulatory systems of the organism, especially those of body weight control, food intake and metabolism are regulated.
Mariana Monteiro has published several original papers and reviews as well as more than 100 abstracts, and gave several invited lectures at national and international meetings and conferences. Mariana Monteiro serves as referee for national and international journals and scientific organizations.
