Neonatology: High-Risk Infant Follow-Up

A follow-up programme for newborns at neurobiological risk after hospital discharge should include a set of systematic assessments aimed at early detection of pathologies and increased risks and referring them for intervention as quickly as possible, including treatment of complications present since admission. Since the 1980s, the benefits of these follow-up programmes have been known, namely in reducing serious pathology, the number of readmissions to intensive care and the number of days of hospitalisation, without increasing the overall costs of care. In addition, the medium-term evolution of children at neurobiological risk has now become the main outcome analysed in clinical trials as an indicator of quality of care, with mortality being too narrow an indicator.
At the end of the training, trainees should have mastered the concepts covered throughout the course and be able to integrate and apply them in clinical practice.

This programme directly responds to the mission of the University of Porto, which aims to create, share and apply knowledge in the service of society, and is aligned with its fundamental values, namely to strengthen the presence of alumni in the life of the University and to modernise and improve the training offer.
