Research Methodologies in Oncology

The European and Portuguese Cancer Control Strategy 2021-2030 aims to significantly reduce the impact of cancer. Although the growing progress in understanding the mechanisms of oncogenesis has enabled the implementation of precision medicine programmes with a positive impact on cancer patient survival, much work remains to be done in order to achieve this goal.

As the study of oncology is a topic of widespread interest, this Continuous Training Unit will provide trainees with access to multidisciplinary research tools, contributing to better training in this area of health sciences. Additionally, by including the participation of faculty from the proposing institutions, it will help promote ICBAS and the University of Porto (UP), fostering greater collaboration between both institutions.

Partner institutions:  Instituto Português de Oncologia do Porto Francisco Gentil, EPE

Objectives

  1. To present to the trainees the state of the art of available research methodologies and technologies for the study of oncological diseases;

  2. To familiarise the trainees with various methodologies and equipment used in translational/pre-clinical oncology laboratories through a strong practical component;

  3. To introduce statistical methods applied in epidemiology and health outcome analysis as a fundamental element in research projects in the field of value measurement in oncology;

  4. To equip the trainees with basic concepts regarding new therapeutic approaches in oncology and the steps involved in designing clinical trials;

To understand the importance of patient-centred oncology research.
