Research Methodology in Medical Sciences

Objectives

Clinical research aims to develop and advance knowledge about diseases, as well as to create new diagnostic tools, treatments, or medical devices, in order to ensure the best possible health outcomes for populations. The complexity of health sciences makes it essential to understand the foundations of scientific methodology and to develop a specific set of skills required to conduct high-quality research.
This course unit will provide an in-depth exploration of the main research methods and their practical application in clinical settings. Based on the multidisciplinary nature of health sciences, different methodologies will be compared in terms of their advantages and limitations, fostering the development of critical thinking regarding the internal and external validity of clinical research studies.
By the end of this course unit, students should be able to:
(1) critically evaluate the methodology and subsequent results of health research studies, and
(2) design a research project by developing a research protocol, in accordance with the ethical principles inherent to clinical research.
