1Health1Welfare - Summer Research School

The interrelationship between human health, animal health and the balance of ecosystems is at the basis of the concept of ‘One Health’. Although this is most evident where there is a direct transmission of health problems between animals and humans, such as in zoonoses or the transmission of resistance to antimicrobial treatments, the concept is much more multifaceted. In the context of the Convention on Biological Diversity, it is recognised that ‘Biodiversity provides ecosystem goods and services essential to human health and well-being’, which expands the scope to include not only the environment but also the well-being dimension. More recently, the concept of One Welfare has emerged to emphasise that the link is not limited to health in the strict sense. The link between animal welfare and human welfare is evident in any situation where there is a strong interdependence between the animal and its owner or handler, whether in the case of companion, production or working animals.
As the experience of the Covid-19 pandemic has shown, the great challenges of One Health One Welfare require collaborative work and interdisciplinary knowledge and skills, where science works in dialogue between fields of knowledge, and with society on priorities and approaches in research, as well as ways of implementation.
The summer course seeks to provide the opportunity to acquire knowledge and research experience in the context of One Health One Welfare, through a curricular component combined with involvement in projects that address pertinent scientific questions aligned with societal challenges and concerns.
The aim is to implement a student-centred strategy using active learning methodologies, exploring the biology-society dialogue. The summer course will develop an idea that has already been explored in various initiatives at U.Porto in other formats. One example is the Animal Behaviour and Welfare module that is part of the Summer in Project programme (Junior University). In this project, secondary school students spend a week between the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S) and other important players in the sector (livestock, official animal collection), learning theoretical concepts and research methods, including carrying out small observational studies.

Training in partnership with: Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP), i3S – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health, and Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO-InBio)

Objectives

  1. To recognize the relevance of multidisciplinary approaches in the production of scientific knowledge and in the science-society dialogue;
  2. To develop dialogue and collaboration skills in a multidisciplinary research team;
  3. To develop the ability to conceive, plan and implement research work, promoting collaborative work;
  4. To develop (and/or deepen) laboratory and/or field work skills in the context of life sciences and the issues under study;
  5. To develop (and/or deepen) science communication skills, both with peers and with the general public;
  6. To recognize the importance of ethics, integrity and good practice in research, and deepen skills in this field.

Being a U.Porto or external student (including higher education institutions that are part of the U.Porto partner networks) attending a higher education study cycle (1st, 2nd or 3rd cycle), or having completed a study cycle of higher education, both situations in the areas of life sciences and health.

Selection and ranking criteria

Candidate selection:

– A letter of motivation will be required (to be valued on a scale of 0 to 20 points), for a weighting coefficient of 30%; (SEE REMARKS*)

– The classification of the 1st cycle will be considered (or, in the case of attendance of the 1st cycle, the average weighted by the ECTS of the classifications of curricular units made in the cycle of studies, rounded to the nearest units), for a weighting coefficient of 70%;

– Candidates with a calculated classification equal to or greater than 13.0 will be selected.

Series of nominations:

– The ranking order will be considered in the selection phase;

The first 10 vacancies are filled, if applicable, by students and alumni of the U.Porto, as well as students from the University's partner networks. Unfilled vacancies (up to a total of 15 and may include the remainder of the first 10) will be filled regardless of the status of U.Porto student.

 Tie-breaking criteria:
The highest grade obtained or to be attended will be considered as a tie-breaker criterion.

* COMMENTS:
