logo do curso
The continuing education unit Biolaboratório – Multidisciplinary Experimentation Project is an “InovPed” course that seeks to explore the intersections between science, art, and society.

It is a joint organisation of two organic units of the University of Porto, the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS) and the Faculty of Sciences (FCUP), and the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S), involving researchers from various fields (biology, science communication and fine arts). The teaching team proposing the training unit includes Maria Strecht Almeida (ICBAS-UP), Fernando Tavares (FCUP), Anna Olsson (i3S and ICBAS-UP), Júlio Borlido Santos (i3S), Maria Manuela Lopes (i3S), Filipe Marques (i3S) and Pedro Dias Ramos (i3S).

Target audience:

Students from the University of Porto or from other institutions; other interested parties, whether connected to the University of Porto or not. The training unit is aimed at anyone interested in life sciences and multidisciplinary approaches, including science communication, science-society dialogue and the intersection of science and art. The training unit will welcome U.Porto students from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles, regardless of their field of study.

Objectives

The essence of this training unit is to promote multidisciplinary learning environments that contribute to merging the acquisition of new knowledge, the development of laboratory skills, and experimentation (not only scientific but also artistic and social) as a response to solving specific problems. In this context, the following objectives can be listed:

– Recognise the relevance of multidisciplinary approaches in the production of scientific knowledge and in the science-society dialogue;

– Developing dialogue and collaboration skills in multidisciplinary teams;

– Developing the ability to design, plan, and implement interdisciplinary project work, promoting collaborative work that enhances the complementarity of knowledge and skills;

– Developing (and/or deepening) laboratory work skills in the context of life sciences and the issues under study;

– Recognise the contribution of artistic practices to reflection on issues associated with life sciences;

– Stimulate skills that promote group projects to different audiences, namely peers, but also other social agents.

Ranking criteria:

The total number of places is 24; 20 of these places, in accordance with UC InovPed regulations, will be for students enrolled at U.Porto;

A letter of motivation will be required (to be scored on a scale of 0 to 20), with a weighting coefficient of 30%;

The 1st cycle classification will be considered (or, in the case of 1st cycle attendance, the ECTS-weighted average of the grades obtained in the study cycle, rounded to the nearest unit, or, in cases of admission based on professional training outside study cycles, the equivalent grade awarded by the selection and ranking panel based on the CV submitted), for a weighting coefficient of 70%;

Candidates with a calculated grade of 13 or higher will be selected.

The tiebreaker criterion will be the best grade in the selection phase.

Ranking will only be applied if the number of applications exceeds the number of places available. Even if it is necessary to apply it, the tiebreaker rule will only be used for candidates who are not admitted, so that they can be ranked for possible call-up as substitutes.
