Master's Degree in Legal Medicine

InformationCourse/CS accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).
The main objective of the Master's programme is to train and promote scientific research in the area of Forensic Medicine as one of the basic sciences of forensic science, obtaining specific competences through the subjects taught: Forensic Pathology, Forensic Biology and Anthropology, Forensic Chemistry and Toxicology, Ethics, Deontology and Medical Law, Medico-Legal Clinic and Forensic Psychiatry and Psychology. It provides knowledge of research methodology and its suitability for forensic medicine, contact with aspects of criminal investigation in the field of forensic medicine, understanding of the potential of forensic medicine in the administration of justice, rigour and demands of its practice in the various forms and their relationships. It includes acquiring knowledge of the main conceptual trends in the area of criminal investigation beyond forensic medicine, which is its main area of research.

Partner Institutions: In addition to the MML's main collaboration with the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences, I.P., it also collaborates with the Public Security Police (PSP), the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Judicial Police (PJ), the District Court of Porto; the Regional Department of Investigation and Penal Action of the District of Porto (DIAP); and Egas Moniz - Cooperativa de Ensino Superior, CRL, to host master's students for their curricular internships.

Objectives

It provides knowledge of research methodology and its suitability for forensic medicine, contact with aspects of criminal investigation in the field of forensic medicine, understanding of the potential of forensic medicine, rigour and demands of its practice in the various forms and their relationships. Contribute to the qualification of INMLCF, SNS and Justice staff, stimulate scientific research applied to forensic practice. It includes acquiring knowledge of the main conceptual trends in the area of criminal investigation beyond forensic medicine, which is its main area of research.

The Master's degree equips its graduates with the knowledge that allows them to apply, depending on their basic training/licence, to work in different Medico-Legal Services, either as Auxiliary Forensic Medicine Technicians at the National Institute of Forensic Medicine and Forensic Sciences (INMLCF), or as Criminal Investigation Support Technicians at the Judicial Police (PJ), the Public Security Police (PSP) and the National Republican Guard (GNR). Because of their specialised training, Masters in Forensic Medicine can also apply to teach subjects in Forensic Medicine and other Forensic Sciences.

  • Schedule: Fridays from 14h00 to 20h00 and Saturdays from 09h00 to 13h00 and from 14h00 to 20h00.

  • 10 monthly instalments, the first of which is due on enrolment/registration and the others in the months following the start of the academic year, by the last day of each month.
