Integrated Masters Degree in Medicine

InformationCourse/CS accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).
The training in medicine at the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Porto (ICBAS), began in 1976, based on an innovative pedagogical and institutional project and different from the traditional training of medicine. This project has evolved, given the new challenges facing the future doctor, which reflect the role he or she should have in society, being now an integrated master’s degree in accordance with the new Basic Law of the Educational System, designed to apply the principles set forth in the “Bologna Process”.

A new innovative and differentiating curricular philosophy incorporates a set of objective core curricular units and a range of optional curricular units that allows each student to enrich their skills according to their needs.
It promotes early clinical contact of students, with an integrated approach to clinical problems from the early stages of the course. The new model promotes training in an even more articulated manner, both in the more basic sciences and in purely clinical ones. The programmatic space intended for a truly professional training was reinforced in the 6th and final year.

The balance between exact, biological, social and medical sciences, taught by multidisciplinary teams, was and continues to be one of the most innovative pedagogical objectives of medicine at ICBAS. Moreover, to achieve the goal of training doctors with the most comprehensive preparation possible, ICBAS and the University Hospital Centre of Porto (General Hospital of Santo António - which operates as the nuclear hospital since 1980) collaborate together in the training of medicine. In addition, ICBAS has established protocols with several health institutions in Greater Porto, such as the Portuguese Institute of Oncology of Porto, the Hospital of Magalhães Lemos and the Hospital Centre of Vila Nova de Gaia/Espinho, as well as several health centres that receive students under a cooperation protocol with Northern Region Health Administration (ARS Norte), or even, for example, the Holy House of Mercy.
