Aquatic Sciences

InformationCourse/CS accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).
The Bachelor's Degree in Aquatic Sciences falls within the area of fundamental and applied biology and is oriented towards scientific research and technological development. Offers training in:

  •     Marine biology
  •     Aquatic ecology
  •     Aquaculture
  •     Aquatic resources management
  •     Food technology
  •     Environmental management
In addition, in the first two years, is given general training in biology, with complementary training in chemistry, biochemistry, geology and statistics, offering students a basic preparation that allows them to enter several 2nd cycles of studies (master's degree) in the area of life and environmental sciences.

Students can participate in research projects in marine animal biology, aquaculture, animal behaviour, effects of pollutants and consequences of climate change, among others.

In addition to laboratory work, study visits and fieldwork are carried out in several disciplines.

Objectives

The course is intended to be diversified as to the subjects taught, allowing the training of senior staff with the ability to solve practical problems, with high scientific and technological aptitude. Due to the accumulation of environmental problems in the oceans, coastal zones, estuaries, rivers and reservoirs, training in the environmental area is an important component of the study plan. On the other hand, the course highlights aquatic animal production as a means of obtaining quality food products (fish and others).

Fields of Specialization

This bachelor’s degree, created in 1981, falls within the domain of general and aquatic biology and is appropriate to the “Bologna Process”, with a duration of 3 years. Its main objectives are to prepare future researchers, teachers and senior staff of institutions and companies, with solid knowledge of general biology and specific preparation in:

Marine biology
Aquatic ecology
Aquatic production
Aquatic resources management
Food technology

The study plan is specific and autonomous in comparison with the other ICBAS courses, from the 1st year. It is organised in quarterly curricular units of intensive teaching, for greater effectiveness in learning. Graduates in Aquatic Sciences may continue their studies by obtaining a master's or doctoral degree from ICBAS, to progress in their careers.

Employment Prospects

The available data indicate that graduates are spread across a diverse range of jobs. Based on the information collected, we can say that graduates have found a placement, although they may not have a stable situation immediately, since many have started their professional life as research fellows. With the new bachelor's degrees of only 3 years, according to the "Bologna Process" model, it becomes almost indispensable for new graduates to attend a master's degree, and many even opt to obtain a doctoral degree, to strengthen their academic training, a situation that occurs in the majority of bachelor's degrees in the various scientific fields.

Besides scholarships, in terms of more stable employment, we can mention higher education, scientific research, aquaculture, and the food sector. Scientific dissemination, oceanariums and public aquariums have also made interesting professional careers possible for alumni of this bachelor's degree.

Others are spread across a wide range of professions, sometimes not related to the specific profile of Aquatic Sciences graduates, but in which skills developed in the bachelor's degree are also applied.

The recognition of sufficient qualification to teach biology in secondary education and of appropriate qualification for the area of natural sciences in basic education is another alternative in terms of career prospects.
