The general aims of the Medicine undergraduate programme of the Abel Salazar Biomedical Institute / Santo António General Hospital are:

• To allow the Medical students to develop skills in the following areas: clinical method and procedures in the disease; oral communication; human biology; human disease; man and society interaction; public health; disease and rehabilitation; research and experimentation;
• To offer an educational environment where students can experiment the joy of the Medical art and further develop a genuine interest for Medicine, thus being capable of developing their full potential while being encouraged to develop their intellectual, scientific and technical abilities;
• To prepare the students for a critical aptitude regarding knowledge and the need to perform self-studying activities during their professional life. To encourage them also to learn via the study of evidence obtained by appropriate and original research tools;
• To provide a network of opportunities for the early contact with patients, both at the level of hospital care and at the level of primary health care, thus boosting a global understanding of the Medicine;

The medical graduation of the ICBAS includes in it first years a basic and multidisciplinary information to respond to the development of the biological areas with biomedical application and the increasing interest in the new technologies used in research of Health and Disease challenges. This information has a strong fundamental sciences base and is taught by both medical and non-medical personnel engaged in biomedical research.
The coordination of the basic and the clinical teaching has the original aspect of being based on the direct cooperation with the HGSA and also on pioneering links with regional health entities. As a result, students have a global view of the clinical implementation of Medicine, both at the hospital and at the community levels.
The encouragement of curiosity, creativity and innovation in the first years is essential for the good development of clinical reasoning when interacting with the patients, and has helped the modernization of the clinician / student relationship, thus creating an optimal environment for the implementation of modern Medicine.
The careful balance among exact, biological, social and medical sciences is one of the major pedagogical aims within the medical graduation at the ICBAS. This institutional strategy culminates with a quite intensive clinical teaching and training year at the 6th and final year.
