Molecular and Cell Biology

General information

Official Code: 5887
Acronym: PDBMC
Description: Molecular and Cellular Biology is a strong scientific area at the University of Porto, more specifically at the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS, UP), the Faculty of Sciences (FCUP) and the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S, UP), having a long tradition in offering advanced studies in this field, both in research and in teaching. The International Doctoral Program in Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCBiology) is jointly organized by these three institutions and is assisted by an international External Advisory Board: Nicholas Proudfoot, University of Oxford, UK; Peter Lindblad, Uppsala University, Sweden; Cord Brakebusch, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Courses Units

Laboratory rotations

BMC02 - ECTS Acquire laboratory skills related to the planning of experiments (including the use of appropriate controls), execution, safety, and data analysis and interpretation. Students will also do laboratory rotations in order to get into direct contact with the research performed in different groups.

PhD thesis Project

BMC03 - ECTS

Training and seminar Part I

BMC01 - ECTS

Objectives: (1) provide a solid knowledge base on Molecular and Cell Biology so that students from different training backgrounds are able to actively participate in academic and industrial research; (2) Promote critical and rigorous thought and discussion of Molecular and Cell Biology; (3) Promote an atmosphere of scientific creativity based on solid and sophisticated knowledge.

Training and seminars Part II

BMC04 - ECTS This curricular unit includes relevant topics on cell biology, protein structure, functional genetics and tissues and systems biology. The students should understand the application of new experimental methodologies, including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics, as well as advanced microscopy analyzes, to the study of the biological complexity of the cell at the molecular and physiological levels. In this context the students should be able to understand and interpret scientific reports, both at the conceptual and methodological level, and to apply and explore bioinformatic tools to functional genetics. They also should be able to raise new scientific questions and apply experimental strategies to answer those questions.
