Objectives
The aim is for trainees to develop critical thinking skills in the areas of shelter medicine and companion animals welfare.
The training sessions will focus on the development of knowledge, skills and competences related to animal welfare assessment, population control, sterilization and handling techniques for spayed/neutered dogs and cats, as well as strategies for civil society awareness for themes such as abandonment and mistreatment of companion animals.
Learning outcomes and competences
At the end of the training, municipal veterinarians should know how to:
Manage infectious diseases, prophylaxis, outbreaks and appropriate treatment (nosocomial);
Understand and adapt anesthetic protocols to the animals to be treated.
Perform pre-surgical procedures (clinical assessment), surgical procedures (Ovariohysterectomy in dogs and cats and (Ovariohysterectomy in female dogs and cats and Orchiectomy in dogs and cats), and post-surgical procedures and monitoring, which are fundamental for abandoned animals population control;
Correctly approach trauma.
