Objectives

Equip students with fundamental knowledge of anesthesiology and analgesia, to enable them to practice the most common anesthetics and analgesics protocols used in several animal species .
Enable students to distinguish and resolve the possible systemic complications that may occur during an anesthetic protocol.
Trasmit to students the procedures and means to identify and eliminate pain in the practice of veterinary medicine.
Provide students with scientific knowledge to facilitate their permanent practice update, and thus be able to follow scientific and technological innovations that occur in this area.

Learning outcomes and competences

This discipline aims to help students gain the following skills:
1. Ability to select a more suitable anesthetic technique, taking into account the clinical condition of the animal, thereby contributing to the health of the patient;
2. Know the main foundations and respective clinical applications of the techniques of anesthesia and analgesia, including local and general anesthesia;Know the basics to perform an anesthetic technique;
4. Ability to assess, identify and resolve possible anesthetic complications.
5. Recognize and interpret the signs monitoring anesthetic in a surgical setting.
6.Recognize situations where euthanasia is necessary and perform it humanely, using appropriate methods in relation to its safety and performance.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical: theoretical exposition with suport of multimedia tools (eventually by e-learning both with sincronous or assincronous classes). Pratical: Pratical demostration and executation of the techniques of surgical semiology

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Exame 70,00
Trabalho escrito 10,00
Trabalho prático ou de projeto 20,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)

Eligibility for exams

75% of presence in pratical classes (complusory) and  theoretical (if requested by the teacher)

Calculation formula of final grade

70 % written theoretical examination

The final exam will be held on the Moodle-UP platform whenever the required conditions are available.

20% - Project (journal club presentation of a cientific paper included))

10% - Written work (preparation of multiple choice questions)

These works (project work and written work) are not mandatory but the quotation for these components of the continuous assessment will not be awarded in case of non-submission until the date established by the regents.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Examination can be accomplished through written test or oral test

Classification improvement

Can be made by submitting a proposal to take the time to appeal in the matter which will include all taught in theory and practice. This exam will only be applied to the 70% of the overall classification corresponding to the Teoretical Exam

Observations

Divided in 7 weeks of theoretical and pratical classes of smalls animails and 7 weeks of theoretical and pratical of large animals

The final theoretical exam will be carried out on the Moodle UP platform and consists of the part of Anesthesiology of small animals and large animals, as follows: Small animals: 50% of the final classification of the exam. Large animals: 50% of the final classification of the exam.
Students must pass the final theoretical exam in order to aprove the disciple and therefore it is eliminatory.
