Objectives

The area of ​​Sports Medicine is a medical specialty, officially recognized for a long time by the Ordem dos Médicos, having a structural organization similar to the other specialties.

It is a medical field that has not been included in the curricular programs of the different medical education institutions in Portugal.

The prescription of physical exercise, leisure or therapeutic, is one of the areas with which any physician struggles in his daily professional practice.

With the creation of an optional area of ​​Sports Medicine and Exercise is intended to enable students of MIM of ICBAS, contact with this specific area and all aspects related to this medical specialty, allowing the acquisition of knowledge that allows the students an improvement of their clinical practice in this area.

This optional unit will allow students to get knowledge that enables them to contact with the circumstances and specificities of the medical evaluation and clinical guidance of an athlete or sportsman, in its various aspects.

Its main objectives will be:

- Provide knowledge in the field of Sports Medicine and Exercise, present the main areas related to Sports Medicine, knowledge acquisition for assessment and medical examination, guidelines for prescription of physical exercise, leisure or therapeutic.

- Practice of Sports Medicine in its main aspects.

- Major injuries related to sports and exercise. Development and counseling of sports injury prevention programs. Nutrition advice and supplementation in sport. Doping.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students should gain experience and learning:

- in the assessment and orientation of a sports athlete, in competition or leisure, guiding a team in their different levels of organization and competition.

- have knowledge for counseling and prescription of therapeutic exercise.

- contact with the circumstances and specificities of the medical evaluation and clinical orientation of an athlete or a sportsman, in its most varied aspects, return to play.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The teaching of this Unit will be done in the form of lectures, theoretical-practical and practical. Joint seminars will be held on topics considered as Base Themes of Discipline, taught by different health professionals. Whenever applicable, practical cases will be used with the presence of an athlete or athletes and team context situations. Teaching online or by video conference will be carried out on some topics.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, teaching / learning methodologies will depend on the existing epidemiological situation and we can have one of the 3 scenarios:

A. Face-to-face - classes will take place in the usual manner

B. Blended format for contact hours:

. Theoretical classes will be held with presence of some students or totally remotely via Zoom in a synchronous way.

. TP classes will be held with presence of some students or totally remotely via Zoom in a synchronous way with discussion of clinical cases.

. Practical classes: the groups will be divided into two parts, half should have contact with the real patient and the other half with the virtual patient or perform another activity indicated by the teacher, alternating the following week.

C. Distance learning - this model will only be applied if the conditions for semi-face-to-face teaching are impossible due to pandemic and will be done entirely with the use of virtual patients and digital platforms.
