Objectives

Primary objectives:

Provide knowledge of scientific methodology, stimulating creativity and, simultaneously, the development of scientific thinking.

Provide opportunities for initiation into clinical research in various areas of knowledge within the Medical Sciences.

Provide students with the opportunity to carry out the research project developed within the framework of DIIC 1.

Teach students to write a report on the execution of a research project and write an original article.

Secondary objectives:

To awaken the scientific vocation, to encourage and identify potential talents among medical students, for their effective participation in research projects.

To awaken a new mentality in relation to the hospital medical activity, regarding the clinical research strand.

Learning outcomes and competences

Upon completion of the curricular unit, the student should

Know:

The structure of a project report (scientific and financial);

The structure of the different types of scientific meetings and the organization procedures;

The types of scientific communications (posters; oral communications);

The structure of the different types of scientific manuscripts, with emphasis for the original manuscripts.

Be able to:

Execute a research project, integrated in a research team;

Select the appropriate statistic tests, perform the statistical analysis and interpret the results;

Prepared a project report;

Prepare a scientific communication (poster or oral communication);

Write an original manuscript and submit it for publication.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

To attend this curricular unit, the student must have completed with success the optional curricular unit “Initiation to Clinical Research I” (DIIC 1).

On average, they will be accepted 2 or 3 students per year.

Program

Biostatistics – Practical approach

Preparing of a project report (scientific and financial components).

Dissemination of results to the scientific community, scientific communications and publications.

Writing an original manuscript.

Submitting an original manuscript for publication.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Integration into the research team;

Execution of the research project conceived in the CU “DIIC 1”;

Follow-up meetings;

Drawing the project report;

Preparation of an oral communication/poster to be presented in a scientific meeting;

and draw up of an original scientific manuscript (optional).

Learning will take place in a phased manner.

With the help of the supervisors and the teacher responsible for the Introduction to Clinical Research II (DIIC 2), the students:

  1. a) will execute the research project conceived in the optional curricular unit “Introduction to Clinical Research I” (DIIC 1);
  2. b) will perform data analysis, interpretation and discussion;
  3. c) will elaborate the project report;
  4. d) will present the results at the scientific meeting; and
  5. g) will draw up a scientific original article to be submitted for publication (optional).

The integration of students into research teams will allow them to execute the research project conceived during the frequency of the curricular unit “DIIC 1”.

The preparation of the project report will enable students to acquire skills in statistical analysis, data interpretation, description and discussion, as well as in the financial management of projects.

The presentation of the results at the scientific meeting will enable students to consolidate skills in scientific communication.

A guided writing a scientific original manuscript (optional) and its submission for publication in a scientific journal with peer review, will allow students to increase skills in scientific writing and in the submission process of scientific manuscripts for publication.

Continuous evaluation:

Continuous assessment regarding attendance and active participation at classes and work meetings, ease of integration into the research team, performance and problem-solving ability during the execution of the research project.

Final evaluation:

Evaluation of the report of the execution of the research project (written document) regarding the structure and content, scientific aspects (clarity of presentation of results, adequacy of analysis methods, discussion, etc.) and financial.

Evaluation (0-20):

Integration into the research team – max. 4;

Participation in follow-up meetings – max. 2;
