Objectives

Not all knowledge of biochemistry and microbiology is applied in medicine. In fact, medicine selects only the knowledge that is useful in the practice of the profession, in particular in the diagnosis, follow-up and treatment of the disease. This course will focus on knowledge of biochemistry and microbiology that are effectively useful for understanding disease, and infection in particular.

More important than knowing the detail of the Krebs cycle, is to understand the significance of disease markers that can be detected in blood or in organic liquids.
More important to know the molecular matabolism of bacteria, it is interesting to know how the bacteria that cause disease, and only these bacteria, can be detected and combated.
In the biochemical component of these disciplines the following molecules will be treated as glucose, albumin, cholesterol, creatinine, amylase, triglycerides, HDL and LDL, urea, uric acid, bilirubin, transaminases, troponins, myoglobin, C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, lipase, gastrin, glycated hemoglobin, PSA, etc.
In the microbiological component of this discipline the following infectious agents will be treated: influenza virus, papillomavirus, adenovirus, hepatitis virus, herpes virus, prions, bacteriophages, streptococci, staphylococci, mycobacteria, escheria coli, gram positive and negative, vibrio of cholera, treponema, parasites, fungi, etc.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students will gain an overview of the practical methods used in clinical medicine to diagnose and monitor various diseases and infections in particular using biochemical markers of blood and organic liquids as well as methods in microbiology.

Students will be asked to solve clinical interpretation exercises in which presented values of biochemical markers of hypothetical patients.
Empirical clinical pictures of common infections for student interpretation will also be presented.
