Objectives

General description of Arthropoda, Echinodermata, Hemichordata and Chordata - Protochordata group. General characteristics of phyla and classes. Biology and phylogeny.

Learning outcomes and competences

Capacity to identify animals of the studied groups. Understand the importance of each group for biodiversity, economy and health. Identification of the most relevant animals for aquaculture.

Phylum Arthropoda.  

Introduction and general characteristics.  Sub-phylum trilobitomorpha. Sub-phylum crustacea: General characteristics; Classes: branchiopoda, maxillopoda e malacostraca. Sub-phylum chelicerata: General characteristics. Sub-phylum hexapoda: classe entognatha and insecta. General characteristics. Sub-phylum myriapoda: classe chilopoda e diplopoda: General characteristics.

Phylum Echinodermata

Introduction and general characteristics. Classes asteroidea, echinoidea, ophiuroidea, holothuroidea and crinoidea.

Phylum hemichordata

Introduction and general characteristics. Biology.  Digestion.  Nervous system.  Reproduction and development. Classe enteropneusta e classe pterobranchia. 

PHLUM CHORDATA

Introduction and general characteristics. Biology and phylogeny. Goup Protochordata. Subphylum Urochordata (Tunicata) and Cephalochordata (amphioxus).
