Objectives

  1. Recognize Pathology as the study of the structural, biochemical and functional changes in cells, tissues and organs that underlie disease

  2. Understand the key mechanisms of cell and tissue adaptation, injury and death

  3. Identify main types and mechanisms of inflammation and its role in tissue regeneration and repair

  4. Identify conditions of metabolic alteration, correlating with clinical and pathological features

  5. Understand the mechanisms causing vascular wall damage, perturbed hemostasis and thromboembolism

  6. Identify the main pathological conditions due to deregulation of the immune system and its correlation with the clinical syndromes of immune disease

  7. Describe the life cycle of common parasites and associated lesions

  8. Understand the mechanisms by which tobacco, alcohol and drugs cause human disease

  9. Recognize the main cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying aging and associated pathological conditions

Learning outcomes and competences

  1. Identify and understand the major mechanisms underlying common human diseases

  2. Identify the chief morphological characteristics of elementary lesions in Pathology

  3. Recognize basic pathological features of common diseases

  4. Understand the contribution of host and environmental conditions and their interaction to the development of disease

  5. Correlate pathological findings with clinical manifestations of disease

  6. Learn and use appropriate medical language

  7. Acknowledge the impact of Pathology on the development of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic tools

Mandatory literature

Kumar Vinay; Robbins and Cotran pathologic basis of disease. ISBN: 978-81-312-2491-5

Comments from the literature

Relevant papers for documental support of the themes will be made available through the Moodle platform.

Teaching methods and learning activities

1. Theoretical sessions: exposition and discussion of the main themes of the Curricular Unit, emphasizing the clinical relevance of the concepts and their present or future application. The interaction between students and teachers, through active discussion, is stimulated during these sessions.

 2. Practical sessions: consolidation of the main concepts of the theoretical sessions and observation of key images, including histopathological slides representative of each theme.

Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Estudo autónomo 106,00
Frequência das aulas 56,00
Total: 162,00

Eligibility for exams

Attendance of, at the least, 75% of the practical sessions

Exceptional situations according to the law will be, obviously, considered.

Calculation formula of final grade

Components of the evaluation:

1. “Theoretical evaluation” component (TEC): Multiple choice questions about the subjects of the theoretical sessions.

Two frequency exams (the first during the mid-evaluation period of the 1st semester and the second during the final evaluation period of the 1st semester), each classified from 0 to 20; the final classification derives from the arithmetical mean of both tests and students are approved in the TEC if their classification equals to or exceeds 9.50 / 20.

 or, alternatively,

Final exam, to be performed during the final evaluation period of the 1st semester (students which performed the first frequency test may also have acess to this test, in which case the result of the frequency test is considered null), classified from 0 to 20. Students are approved in the TEC if their classification equals to or exceeds 9.50 / 20.

2. “Practical evaluation” component (PEC)
: continuous evaluation of the pratical sessions based on 4 evaluation tests, scheduled for the beginning of a pratical class, focusing on the concepts acquired on the pratical sessions. This classification is expressed from 0 to 20, and students are approved in the PEC if their classification equals to or exceeds 9.50 / 20.

Determination of the final classification

Approval in the Curricular Unit of Pathology I implies a classification equal to or exceeding 9.50 / 20 in both components of the evaluation (TEC and PEC).

A negative result in any of the components will lead to disapproval.

The final classification of the curricular unit (FCCU) is calculated according to the formula:

FCCU = 0.7 x TEC + 0.3 x PEC

Examinations or Special Assignments

No special evaluation events or assignments are foreseen.

Internship work/project

Not applicable.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

According to the Standards for Evaluation and Pedagogical Orientation of the University of Porto.

Should be performed according to the schedule approved by the Pedagogical Council

Classification improvement

Improvement of the classification in the TEC will be performed according to the schedule approved by the Pedagogical Council.

Improvement of the classification in the PEC is not foreseen according to regulations of University of Porto.

Observations

Given the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic and adaptations to distance learning, the practical assessment will be carried out through 2 assessment events (the first relating to the content of practical classes no. 2 to 6, and the second relating to the content of practical classes no. 7 to 12), lasting 20 minutes each, to be held on dates to be agreed with the students.

The approval in the practical component requires a final classification equal to or higher than 9.50 values.
