Objectives

The course of Ichthyology is focused on three central themes: i-Biological Bases, ii-wild fauna and iii-production (fisheries and aquaculture), in order to provide students with extended knowledge on fish to them assign the necessary skills to develop independent work in the field of fisheries biology, fish farming and simultaneously in environmental protection.

Learning outcomes and competences

The master's degree in marine science, proposes to train people capable of developing a professional or research activity in marine biology with the highest level of requirement. Since a significant percentage of graduates in the future will have to come to deal with fish in the development of their profession, a course specifically dedicated to deepen the knowledge and skills of students in the most relevant topics on biology, production and environmental protection fish is highly recommended.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Students must have enough knowledge in biology that allow addressing in a comprehensive way to fish the subjects listed above (Biological bases, wildlife and production) in detail so that they will be able to develop the most demanding work. The lectures are presented in the form of blocks. They are complemented with practical classes on the same subjects to practice the procedures of each matter. Students present a seminar on a related theme. At the same time, the students are asked to face a challenge that simulates the submission of a project or a licensing process, leading them to organize themselves into groups in order to overcome the difficulties that would be raised by the competent authorities. There is a field trip to a professional contact with reality. The assessment covers three components 1- continuous assessment, which includes the presentation of seminars, and the report of the field trip; 2-written examination and 3-presentation and discussion of the group work.

Program

1-Review of rules and methods of identification, classification and phylogeny in fish. Meristic and biometric characters. 2 -The growth in fish, age and growth rate determination, sex ratio, age of first sexual maturation and fertility. 3 - Studies on ichthyoplankton. Eggs and larvae. Biology of the first stages of life of marine fish. The knowledge of this phase of life and the management of fisheries resources. 4 - Anatomical, mechanical and physiological Basis in fish movement. Migrations in different aquatic environments. Vertical and horizontal migrations. Fishing of migratory species. 5 - fishing concepts, stock and population. Stocks assessment. Fisheries biology and development of fisheries. 6 - Aquaculture in the world. Possibilities and limitations of aquaculture. The sustainable development of aquaculture. 7 Interference of fisheries and aquaculture on the environment. Endangered species. Institutions for the protection of wildlife.
