Provide insight into the methods and techniques to use in water and wastewater treatment. Provide capabilities to define appropriate interventions and consider decision making in the assessment, design, planning, construction, operation and maintenance of municipal sewage and industrial wastewater treatment operations and water for urban supply.
To allow the development of a scientific and technological understanding of the treatment processes of water and wastewater.
Having successfully completed the module, you will be able to: Know how water and wasterwater treatment plants operate; Simple design equations for water and wastewater treatment plant; Select the correct series of unit processes for a particular water and wastewater type; Adapt and use in the correct context design equations for the design and operation of wastewater treatment plant; Critically analyse problems that may arise in the operation of water and wastewater treatment plant; Formulate approaches to treat water and wastewater in the most cost effective manner; Formulate approches for the management of residuals from water and wastewater treatment operations.
1 - Water: state of the art 2 - Basic principles and characteristics of hydraulics and hydrology 3 - Gravity-fed water system 4 - Open channel Flow 5 - Flow of incompressible fluids in pipelines 6 - Hydraulic machines 7 - Introduction to the treatment of effluents, types of effluents, current legislation, Wastewater treatment and reuse (removal of coarse solids; sedimentation, filtration; flotation; flocculation and coagulation; oxidation and reduction; clarification; ion exchange; adsorpção; processes of separation by membranes; degassing, distillation; electrochemical processes; precipitation; radiation) 8 - General characteristics of of wastewater treatment plant (Aerobic, anoxic, anaerobic; of biomass suspended or fixed bed; combined processes) 9 - Desinfection 10 - Treatment, reuse and disposal of solids
The teaching consists of lectures, calculation exercises, project work and compulsory study visits.

A - Exam grade: 70%; B - Creative homework (seminar/project): 20%; C - Oral presentation of the creative homework: 10 %
Failure to perform the creative homework imply the assignment of zero values to these elements of evaluation.
Final score: A x 0.70 + B x 0.20 + C x 0.10 Minimum score to be achieved in the examination: 8.0 This criterion applies both to the 1 st season and time of appeal.
