Objectives

The aim of this discipline is to create the conditions for students to understand the complexity of the marine and freshwater environment, its role on the functioning of the earth system and the need for an integrated management of human activities related to aquatic environments.
The main objectives are:

- To understand the role of oceans and water bodies on the earth climate and as a source of goods and services to humanity

- European Maritime Policy “Towards a future Maritime Policy for the European Union”

- Eco-regions concept: the geographical requirement for implementing the ecosystem approach in European waters

- Helsinki Convention, OSPAR Convention and the Barcelona Convention

- Water Framework Directive

- Marine Environment Strategy - Thematic Strategy and Conservation of the Marine Environment

- Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES), Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) and European Global Ocean Observing System (EuroGOOS)

- The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES)

- EU Common Fisheries Policy (CFP)

- Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) and Marine spatial planning
