Paulo Vaz-Pires is, since 2024, full professor at ICBAS and researcher at ICBAS and CIIMAR from U.Porto, works in seafood technology, quality and safety.
He obtained a degree in Sciences of the Aquatic Environment at ICBAS/UP in 1986.
Between 1986 and 1990 he worked in a ICBAS project to study migratory fish from the rivers of Alto Minho region (Northwest Portugal).
Between 1986 and 1997 he worked in Professional Training in the Fisheries Sector, as teacher of Centro Forpescas (now For-Mar), mainly Fisheries Technology and Seafood Processing.
In 1990 he started research work at the School of Biotechnology of the Portuguese Catholic University, after a post-graduation in Food Science and Engineering, which ended with the presentation of a PhD thesis, in 1996, on methods for extending fish shelf-life. One year of post-doc work followed (1996-1997), in the same area.
He signed, in 1997, a contract with ICBAS/UP as invited auxiliary professor, mainly for teaching areas of Seafood Technology, Food Technlogy and Seafood Quality of the graduations in Sciences of the Aquatic Environment and Veterinary Medicine.
He is effective member of CIIMAR/UP since 1998.
In 1999 he started the common teaching carreer as auxiliary professor (definitive nomination in 2004) and in 2006 he continues the career as associate professor.
He obtained the "agregação" (public defense of teaching, research and development work) in 2011.
In addition to seafood technology, quality and safety, his last works are focused on seafood processing by-product management and welfare in aquaculture.
